We are seeking a motivated and curious individual who’s excited to explore a career in Human Resources. Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, the Human Resources Intern will focus on project-based work in support of city-wide human resources functions across the employee lifecycle.

Expected Hours of Work
Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Expectation is 40 hours per week, though a reduced schedule of at least 20 hours per week is available to accommodate coursework for currently enrolled students. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential duties and responsibilities associated with this internship.

  • Learning the Foundations of HR. Gain exposure to core HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, employee relations, and compliance
  • Project Work. Assist with strategic HR projects, such as employee engagement initiatives, policy updates, wellness programs, and HR data analysis
  • Recruitment and Selection. Assist with recruitment and selection tasks such as job posting maintenance, applicant tracking system support, interview scheduling, and reference checks
  • Benefits. Assist with the yearly benefits survey and gain professional knowledge of benefits for all employees
  • Wellness Planning. Support planning and execution of employee wellness events and recognition programs
  • Support Across Teams. Collaborate with HR team members on various day-to-day tasks and priorities
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities
This internship does not have supervisory responsibilities.Minimum Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in, or graduated within the last 12 months, from a post-secondary degree focusing on Human Resources, Business, or closely related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the internship with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • A desire to learn and contribute to a dynamic team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive personnel and employee information.
  • Valid driver's license, or ability to arrange reliable transportation to offsite meetings and events
Desired Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program related to Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Six to twelve months of professional experience in a HR role or a related field.
  • Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certification or other equivalent professional certification within the industry.
  • Experience working with a City or other governmental agency.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and regulations regarding public sector employment including but not limited to Pay Equity, Veterans Preference, Americans with Disabilities Act, HIPPA, and MN Government Data Practices Act.
  • Skills in goal setting; program management; program development, implementation, and evaluation; and/or business analysis techniques and principles.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is conducted primarily indoors. Employees in this position are generally free from work hazards. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
  • Regularly read and interpret documents and other written material. 
  • Regularly communicate and exchange information with others in person, over the telephone, and using written communication methods. 
  • Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery.
  • Occasionally, traverse around the City to meetings or events. 
  • Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in municipal law. 
  • Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
