About Us:
The City of Glendale's Transportation Department works to ensure safe and efficient travel for the people of Glendale.
The Role:

The Traffic Signal Supervisor Performs technical and supervisory work in planning, organizing and directing electronic design efforts and the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment throughout the City.

The ideal candidate for the role will have an Associate Degree or specialized trade school education in electronics, and three years of experience in traffic signal installation and repair, including one year of lead or supervisory experience. 

   

Salary and Sign-On Bonus:
This position is a Grade 409 with an annual salary between $73.056-$109,584.

$2,000 bonus paid as $1,000 after 30 days and $1,000 after 6 months of employment, contingent on remaining in good standing.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:
Regular status position’s offer:

  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays.
  • Vacation leave accrues at 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours per year), and increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years, and to 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours per year).
Retirement:
  • This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
  • Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12%.



  1. Plans, schedules, organizes and supervises the activities and staff involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and equipment, and the design and development of electronic traffic systems. 
  2. Prepares schedules for the preventive maintenance program for signals.
  3. Supervises the testing, diagnosis and repair of electronic controllers, detectors, circuits and conducts preliminary planning and layout, assigns bluestaking, conducts site review, schedules and assigns crews and equipment; supervises the installation of new signalized intersections and the upgrading of existing equipment; coordinates work with utility companies, contractors, and citizens.
  4. Updates and maintains the computer data base of work completed and work to be performed.
  5. Supervises and participates in emergency signal repair work during and/or after normal working hours.
  6. Updates and maintains the daily log of signal repairs and lamp outages.
  7. Prepares training materials and conducts training of traffic signal crews.  
  8. Assists in the development of operating policies and procedures for the section.
  9. Provides training and instruction to crews on work methods, safety, policies and procedures, and related requirements.
  10. Monitors materials and inventory; authorizes the purchase of materials and supplies.
  11. Receives and resolves complaints relative to signal operations or crew activities.
  12. Assists in the development and monitoring of the section budget.
  13. Performs timing checks at intersections.
  14. Coordinates work activities with other departments or divisions.
  15. Reviews and ensures compliance with State, Federal and OSHA rules and regulations.
  16. Researches, reviews and orders new equipment regarding traffic signals.
  17. Attends construction meetings and inspects project activities.
  18. Reviews proposed and final plans for traffic signal projects, school zone flashers, and speed radar feedback signs.
  19. Manages and monitors City and Federal projects regarding traffic signals in the City of Glendale.
  20. Operates city vehicles.
  21. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Associate Degree or specialized trade school education in electronics, and three years of experience in traffic signal installation and repair, including one year of lead or supervisory experience. 

Knowledge of:
The principles and practices involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, controllers, and electronic traffic systems
Troubleshooting techniques for traffic signal and control equipment and other effective corrective measures
The occupational hazards and necessary precautions relative to electrical and electronic work and working on and along the roadway 
The tools, equipment and general practices of electronics and electronic design
Knowledge of microcomputer operations and applications to traffic signal systems.

Skill in:
Locating and repairing defects in traffic signal equipment

Ability to:
Plan, schedule, organize, train, and supervise the work of others
Plan and schedule work projects and the personnel and equipment needed
Read, understand and follow plans, drawings and specifications and schematics
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, contractors, and the general public
Monitor a section budget
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing 
Operate city vehicles

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  

Special Requirements 
Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.
Valid Arizona driver's license.
