Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment. - Performs skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work, such as electrical wiring, finishing concrete, plumbing or carpentry.
- Operates various light, medium, heavy and specialized equipment including brush tractors, dump trucks, mowing equipment, truck and trailer, backhoe, crosswalk stripers, street striping truck, and high lifts.
- May work from blueprints or "as-built" drawings.
- Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety and operation of equipment.
- Maintains daily work records and prepares safety reports; may perform computerized data entry work.
- Performs maintenance and minor repair on the equipment.
- Operates city vehicles depending on area of assignment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and establishes a preventative maintenance schedule for Fire Department SCBA's, fit test equipment, air compressors, and mobile fill stations; performs air quality testing.
- Prepares budget, purchases materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete assigned tasks.
- Maintains and repairs other equipment and tools such as chain saws, gas powered fans, fire nozzles, fire radios, extrication tools, etc.
- Inspect and maintain equipment, fire hydrants, generators, air compressors, grounds, fire station appliances, etc.
- Assist in the inspection of firefighter turnouts; repair/cleaning of turnouts and properly fitting firefighters for turnouts. Pick up and return turnouts to members on the field.
- Operates heavy mowing equipment, chain saws, weed eaters, brush tractors, hi-lifts, and other landscape equipment.
- Trims trees and bushes, cares for plants.
- Makes repairs to flood irrigation lines and valves.
- Repairs and maintains dry wells.
- Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.
- Operates trucks and equipment such as concrete saws, dump trucks, front end loaders and water trucks.
- Performs pothole repairs, patching, crack sealing, cleaning, street and curb cutting.
- May use computers to manage data on work projects and programs for management.
- Maintains appropriate levels of equipment and supplies, inventories and orders as needed.
- Solicits repair and other cost estimates from outside providers, initiates repair action requests and submits for approval.
- Distributes, transports and retrieves vehicles, equipment, and supplies as needed.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
- Sets up rooms for various meetings and functions.
- Operates various light and medium equipment including forklifts, commercial sweepers, and high-speed buffers.
- Starts and stops equipment and makes modifications to equipment to maintain a comfortable and safe facility.
- Sets up, troubleshoots and repairs telephones, microphones and A/V equipment.
- Locks and unlocks buildings and secures buildings after working hours.
- Maintains and updates journal and database for all automatic control schedules.
- Uses computer to manage data on work projects and programs.
- Maintains appropriate levels of equipment and supplies.

Knowledge of:
- Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
- Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned area of responsibility
- Safety requirements and precautions including confined space entry procedures
- Blue stake laws and underground utility identification practices
- Computers and applicable data management and maintenance programs for area of responsibility, if required
- Purchasing procedures depending on area of assignment
- Effective customer service skills
Ability to:
- Read, understand and explain blue prints, maps, and bluestaking procedures
- Deal courteously with the public and answer citizen questions
- Safely barricade work sites; understand and follow safe working practices
- Determine what equipment, tools, manpower and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects
- Operate light, medium, and heavy equipment; perform maintenance and minor repairs on it
- Complete reports and logs and enter and retrieve computer data
- Keep accurate documentation of confined space entry and gas monitor readings
- Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices
- Follow instructions, either in written form or presented orally
- Develop effective working relationships with coworkers, City staff, management, the public and others
- Operate city vehicles; depending on area of assignment.
Special Requirements
- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
- Valid Arizona driver's license.
- May be subject to call back, stand-by duty and rotating shifts.
- Course Certificate, and state certificates in self-contained breathing apparatus and hazardous chemical handling may be required after hire, based on assignment.
