Community Risk Reduction Specialist Temporary - Fire Department

Under general supervision of the Community Risk Reduction Manager, provides fire and life safety education and community outreach initiatives with a primary focus on elementary and secondary school populations. Coordinates and delivers age-appropriate programming centered on fire prevention, injury prevention, overdose awareness and prevention, and overall life safety education. Supports Community Risk Reduction strategies through school partnerships, special events, and community engagement on behalf of the Fire Department.

*Temporary Personnel who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to participate in medical insurance coverages provided by the City of Glendale and may accrue paid sick time (PST) with use in accordance with Glendale’s terms.  All personnel scheduled to work at least 20 hours for 20 weeks in a fiscal year will participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). 

1. Coordinate and deliver developmentally appropriate fire and life safety curriculum for elementary and secondary students, including fire prevention, overdose awareness and recognition, and naloxone education, aligned with Community Risk Reduction priorities.
2. Facilitate youth-centered and community programs including but not limited to CPR, AED, First Aid, Overdose Prevention, Water Safety, Child Passenger Safety Seats, Youth Fire Setting Prevention, and fire and life safety initiatives for residents, students, staff, businesses, and visitors of all ages.
3. Serve as  the primary contact for assigned school-based education and outreach programs. 
4. Support youth engagement initiatives, special events, youth volunteer programs, and public relations efforts that promote fire and life safety awareness.
5. Assist in promoting youth-focused fire and life safety programming, including overdose prevention initiatives, to local officials, internal and external stakeholders, and community partners.
6. Distribute age-appropriate educational materials, digital media, presentations, and public information content supporting fire prevention and overdose prevention messaging.
7. Maintain records, certifications, program data, and outcome metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and support reporting requirements.
8. Monitor inventory related to educational materials, naloxone distribution, and school-based program supplies ensuring materials are stocked, organized, and available to support program delivery and community outreach
9. Perform administrative duties including data entry, reporting, scheduling, grant support, and program documentation.
10. Operate a City vehicle in support of school-based and community outreach programming.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Associate’s degree in education, public relations, or related field and two years of experience supporting  public education, safety education, community outreach, youth programming, or public engagement initiatives, preferably with a government agency.

Knowledge of:  
 Modern principles and practices of event logistics
 Principles and practices of curriculum implementation

City policy and procedures, ordinances, and fire/life safety codes 
 Principles of safety education programs, public relations, marketing, and advertising
Issues and ethics of care, protection, and accessibility as related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations as it pertains to assigned areas.

Skill in: 
 Computer operation, applicable software, and graphics 
 Presenting education classes utilizing projectors, audio-speakers, and video recording devices.  

Interacting with and coordinating with other agencies.

Ability to: 

• Coordinate and deliver school-based fire and life safety programs aligned with Community Risk Reduction priorities.
• Operate City vehicles and fire department equipment to support outreach and educational activities.
• Operate within community services (CRR) budgets responsibly.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive program matters, public perception, and community participation.
• Use data systems and software to track participation and program outcomes.
• Present and facilitate training for diverse audiences, including students, staff, and community members.
• Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with staff, leadership, schools, officials, and the public.
• Coordinate and deliver lesson plans, schedules, correspondence, and educational materials.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

Special Requirements 
 Valid Arizona's Driver License. 
 Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends. 
 Possess and maintain the following within one year of hire, or as noted:

• Certificate of CPR and First Aid Instructor
• Possess or obtain ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 through FEMA
• Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II (preferred)
• Youth Fire Setting Intervention Specialist I (preferred)

Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.
