What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard I, II, or III position at City of Garden City (KS)?
Continuously monitors pool and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all patrons.
Enforces pool rules, policies, and safety regulations in a consistent and courteous manner.
Responds promptly and effectively to emergency situations, including water rescues and first aid incidents.
Administers first aid and CPR/AED in accordance with training and certification standards.
Maintains constant vigilance and appropriate positioning while on lifeguard duty.
Assists with opening, closing, and securing the pool facility.
Performs routine pool maintenance duties, including checking safety equipment and maintaining cleanliness.
Provides customer service by answering questions and offering general information to patrons.
Works cooperatively with other lifeguards, supervisors, and Parks & Recreation Department staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to pass a lifeguard skills test, including swim endurance and rescue scenarios.
Knowledge of lifeguarding principles, water rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures.
Ability to remain alert, calm, and decisive in emergency situations.
Ability to enforce rules tactfully and communicate effectively with patrons of all ages.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Lifeguard I - Entry level guard position.
Lifeguard II - One to three years of experience required. WSI certification preferred.
Lifeguard III - Requires WSI certification. The head guard is responsible for instruction of swimming lessons in accordance with guidelines and regulations. Supervision of Lifeguard positions I & II. Four to seven years of experience required. Environment:
Work is performed primarily at a municipal aquatic facility, including outdoor swimming pools, water slides, splash pad, etc. The work environment involves frequent exposure to water, pool chemicals, heat, humidity, sun, and varying weather conditions.
Equipment / Tools Used:
- Rescue equipment, including rescue tubes, reaching poles, backboards, and flotation devices
- First aid and emergency response equipment, including first aid kits, CPR masks, and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
- Pool safety equipment such as lifeguard chairs, lane lines, and safety signage
- Two-way radios, whistles, and other communication devices
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
