General Definition of Work

Performs skilled trades work inspecting, repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive, construction and power driven equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Automotive Shop Supervisor.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions

Repairs and maintains automobiles, emergency service vehicles, trucks and equipment.

Inspects, diagnoses problems and services automobiles, trucks and other equipment.

Services, maintains and performs preventive maintenance on automobiles, trucks, light, medium and heavy equipment.

Changes spark plugs, distributor caps and oil filters; replaces transmissions, bearings, gears, etc.; repairs air conditioners.

Rebuilds engines, motors, differentials and hydraulic assemblies; repairs front ends and drive trains.

Fabricates various metal parts.

Installs water pumps, radiators, batteries, brakes and other equipment; replaces hydraulic lines on equipment.

Performs tune-ups on cars, tractors, trucks, mowers, weed eaters, etc.; changes oil; replaces belts; changes tires.

Lubricates equipment, replaces filters; checks brakes, checks antifreeze, fluid levels, battery, etc.

Does electrical work on automotive equipment such as repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.

Wires in police radios; installs gun locks, protective cages, sirens, video camera and radar systems in police cars.

Performs the duties of an Equipment Operator when required.

Performs general custodial duties in the automotive shop area; picks up parts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; mechanical aptitude; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED with coursework in automotive mechanics, or related field and moderate experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration, frequently working in high, precarious places and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and working with explosives; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to acquire refrigerant recovery licensure within twelve months of employment.

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
