Description:
Under the direction of the Operations Lieutenant, the Civilian Service Officer patrols the City, observes and issues tickets for parking violations, answers general questions from citizens, directs traffic as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of departmental matters
- Able to keep accurate records and to write legibly
- Excellent communication skills
- Able to deal tactfully, courteously and professionally with the public
- Must be willing to work outside in all types of weather, including rain, and extreme heat/cold
- Must be able to walk and stand for most of an 8-hour workday
- Good knowledge of the geography of the City and City ordinances
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Marks parked vehicles for timed parking spaces and issues tickets for time violations
- Observes and issues tickets for other types of parking violations
- Complete and follow up on 7-day violations
- Answers inquiries from citizens pertaining to parking tickets issued
- Provides information to citizens on locations of streets, buildings, offices or other general information
- Completes miscellaneous reports as required
- Informs communications center of any need for police, fire, ambulance or any other emergency
- Assists in directing traffic at accidents, fires, traffic obstructions or other traffic congestion
- Other duties as may be assigned, including but not limited to: lost/found bicycle pickup during warm weather months, assisting with the yearly Police Auction, assisting in the Records Bureau, traffic control at special events
The Civilian Service Officer may also be assigned duties from the office of the Community Development Director. When performing these duties, the Civilian Service Officer works under the direction of the Community Development Director or his/her designee.

Starting rate for this position is $19.12/hour with an excellent benefit package that includes health, dental, vision, & life insurance, paid time off, plus an IMRF pension.
