ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $70,570.00 - 117,617.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $85,000.00 - 102,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The Land Surveying Supervisor serves as a project surveyor/survey party chief responsible for coordinating and executing City-wide survey projects under the guidance of the City Surveyor/Assistant City Surveyor. This position is anticipated to be 50 to 70% field surveying. The role provides specific direction to a land surveying crew, manages projects from inception to completion, and performs a full range of land surveying tasks. Responsibilities include all aspects of field surveying, a lead role in on-site topographic and construction surveying office, may include preparation of land survey plats, and may include thorough research and review of existing boundaries and easements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

TECHNICAL SURVEYING & ANALYSIS

  • Conducts field surveying using robotic total stations, GPS, and scanning equipment.
  • Processes field data.
  • Creates Civil 3D drawings containing topographic, feature, and utility data gathered during field surveys for use by engineers, consultants, and others
  • Keeps accurate notes, records, maps, and sketches to describe and certify work performed.
  • Performs various calculations using coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and algebra in order to execute surveying for projects.
  • Interprets maps and plats for the location of right of way and easements.
  • Performs tasks to maintain the City Vertical and Horizontal Control Systems.
  • Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys.
  • Review construction and engineering plans, legal descriptions, subdivision plats, and other survey documents for compliance with City and State requirements; conducts calculations and performs construction staking.
  • Write land descriptions and prepare associated exhibits in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes and local regulations.

PROJECT COORDINATION & COMMUNICATION

  • Oversees, coordinates, and performs survey work on projects while maintaining close communication with City personnel and outside contractors, including engineers, architects, consultants, and local governmental officials.
  • Coordinates survey work with contractors and other City workers; attends project meetings.
  • Engage in identifying errors and inconsistencies in design and construction plans and works with consulting engineers, project managers, and/or construction contractors to resolve.
  • Assist in the preparation of Land Survey Plats and minor Subdivision Plats for City projects.

LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION

  • Receives instructions and general direction from supervisor prior to initiating survey projects and directs staff engaged in the technical aspects of survey projects. May be assigned full ownership of some projects.
  • Schedules and assigns tasks to crew members, defines survey task priorities, and inspects work for completion and conformance to standards.
  • Directs technical staff in the operation of a full range of optical, mechanical, and electronic surveying equipment.
  • Conducts Performance Reviews, provides ongoing employee feedback, and addresses employee concerns.
  • Resolves workers' problems and refers more serious matters to supervisor; resolves project issues by thinking critically and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to remain current with changing technology as well as completing ongoing training to provide awareness of the latest developments in equipment and systems.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of Colorado State Surveying Statutes and Board Rules.
  • Ability to interpret laws, statutes, and ordinances as they relate to survey matters.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret property descriptions.
  • Ability to conduct title research.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Preferred

College degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field; or equivalent related work experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Three years of experience providing technical assistance for survey projects under the charge of a professional Land Surveyor, or combination of education and experience.

Certifications/Licenses/Specialized Training

  • Valid Driver's License - Regular
