WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Thursday. Work season June 2026 through October 2026 - depending on availability - Employment Term not to exceed five months

SUMMARY
This seasonal position supports the protection and enhancement of natural ecosystems through a variety of semi-skilled tasks. Primary responsibilities include weed control using herbicides, mowing, or hand-pulling; wildlife management; care and maintenance of native plants; installation and repair of irrigation systems; range or agricultural activities; and participation in other restoration and stewardship activities within natural areas.

This is an hourly-with-benefits position that provides access to the City’s HMO medical at the employee’s cost, but does not include other insurance or retirement benefits. The employee accrues personal time if they work at least 30 hrs/week for 6 months or more. The employee is paid for standard City holidays on a pro rata basis. If the employee is required to work on a holiday, the employee is given another day off as a substitute; day to be determined by the employee’s supervisor. Employee may be required to work a Saturday shift on a routine basis.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision will be provided by the Resource Management Crew Chief with task-based guidance from Resource Management Technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
  • Safely and responsibly apply herbicides to control noxious and undesirable plant species.
  • Control noxious and other exotic weedy plants through mowing, cutting, releasing biological controls, and other techniques.
  • Plant, water, and provide aftercare of native plants.
  • Removal of invasive trees using a chainsaw and chipper.
  • Educate the public through field contacts and other communications.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles such as mowers, trucks, sprayers, etc.
  • Assist with volunteer projects as needed.
  • Remove trash and litter from natural area sites.
  • May help with wildlife habitat improvement projects.
  • May help with plant identification and monitoring.
  • May assist with range or agricultural activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge or interest in nature.
  • Ability and/or willingness to learn to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability and/or willingness to operate a variety of automotive and power equipment used for natural area restoration and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, outside professionals, and the general public. .
  • Ability to use computers, and other standard office equipment.

Education and Experience
High School or general education degree (GED); college-level course work in natural resources or related field preferred.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or fellow employees.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current Colorado Driver's License and be at least 18 years old.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, carry, talk, hear, and traverse uneven surfaces and terrain. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, twist, push, and pull. The employee must have manual dexterity to operate tools and motor and manual vehicles. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, sometimes severe in nature. The employee will be expected to work on natural areas sites inhabited by rattlesnakes and sites containing prairie dogs that may be infected with plague. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee will, on occasion, be required to work in high, exposed locations.
