What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter Basic position at City of Foley?
Under general supervision, the Firefighter Basic is responsible for the prevention and suppression of fires that occur within the response jurisdiction. Performs operational functions for emergency response activities and light maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Participates in training with career and volunteer personnel in order to master fire suppression and hazard mitigation skills. Makes instant and precise decisions on life and death situations every day. Protects life and citizen’s property. Performs emergency medical services to patients at fires, wrecks, and any other accident scene. Prepares reports after call completions. Work is performed in accordance with city and department regulations. Requires some independent judgment and technical knowledge. Reports to the Fire Service Lieutenant.Essential Functions
High School Diploma or its equivalent. Any combination of education, training, or coursework that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. No prior work experience is required.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess and maintain all of the following required certifications: Alabama Certified Firefighter I and II and an Alabama EMT Basic Certification.
Valid Driver’s License.
- Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, traffic accidents, rescue and other emergency calls to protect life and property.
- Assists in large scale evacuation as needed.
- Operates apparatus for response to and from operations at emergency scenes.
- Operates various hose streams at emergency scenes.
- Searches emergency scenes for trapped and/or injured victims. Rescues victims and performs life sustaining measures.
- Operates various types of power and hand tools as needed to locate and extinguish fires or reach victims.
- Aids and assists fellow firefighters on scene. Receives and carries out orders on emergency scenes as directed by the Incident Commander or his/her designee.
- Collects information at emergency scenes for fire reports.
- Utilizes all fire/rescue related equipment maintained in the Department’s inventory.
- Prepares equipment for the next call or emergency.
- Assists in planning and performance of Public Safety Programs.
