What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Mechanic Helper position at City of Flint?
Services automotive equipment; assists journeyman automobile mechanics in the overhaul and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, and miscellaneous automotive construction equipment; performs related work as required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
- Cleans, washes oils, and greases automotive vehicles and parts.
- Assists mechanics in the repair of automotive equipment.
- Independently makes the less complex automotive repairs; makes routine adjustments and replacements of parts.
- Dismantles automotive equipment preparatory to repair or replace worn or broken parts.
- Cleans and cares for tools and machines.
- Performs custodial duties by policing and keeping premises clean, answers telephone on the afternoon shift.
- Installs and removes batteries, repairs tires.
- Education equivalent to high school graduation or 12th grade equivalent.
- Must pass the promotional exam after six (6) months and be certified as a Specialty Mechanic in at least 2 of the first 6 categories of heavy-duty truck repair as defined by the State of Michigan (Categories include Engine Repair-Gasoline, Engine Repair Diesel, Drive Train, Brakes & Braking Systems, Suspension & Steering Systems, and Electrical Systems.) OR equivalent qualification/certification in a branch of the United States Military Service (copy of DD-214 must be provided as proof of qualification) to progress to a Fleet Mechanic I.
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
- General mechanical ability and skill in making routine mechanical repairs to various parts of automotive equipment.
- Ability to perform routine servicing, including refueling, lubricating, battery, tire repair, radiator examination, and washing of cars.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
- Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
