What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operators II & III - Collections position at City of Flagstaff?
*Please note that the minimum qualifications for Equipment Operators II & III are different and you will be put in one of the roles depending on your experience.*
Future employees will work to advance the City’s mission and values by supporting the Solid Waste Section's Collections Program through the safe operation of complex Collections equipment, such as front load or automatic side-load collections trucks, and the maintenance of these vehicles. Our new equipment operators will ensure clean, efficient waste collection by navigating challenging city environments, maintaining equipment to the highest standard, and contributing to public health and environmental quality. - Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Working with another crewperson, lifts and loads bulky items too large for the regular solid waste route pickup service.
- Loads trash into collection vehicles using tools such as shovels, rakes, and pitchforks as well as by hand.
- May drive and operate the rear loading collection truck (used for bulky items pickup), as assigned.
- After training on various solid waste equipment, serves as a backup solid waste equipment operator, and may temporarily be assigned to a hoist & haul, front loading, or automated side loading collection vehicle.
- Cleans and services solid waste collection equipment and vehicles as required.
- Makes simple field repairs and services equipment as required for daily operation.
- Performs other solid waste manual duties as assigned, such as bin maintenance, welding, litter pickup, etc.
- Safely operates a side loading collection truck, or front loading collections truck.
- Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver License
- One year of equipment experience with CDL
- Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
- Experience driving commercial vehicles in city conditions.
- Experience performing strenuous manual laborer tasks.
- Some welding & painting experience
For the Equipment Operator III Role:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver License
- Two years of equipment experience with CDL
- Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
- Experience driving commercial vehicles in city conditions.
- Experience performing strenuous manual laborer tasks.
- Some welding & painting experience
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- Must be willing and able to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
- All Emergency Service Employees shall maintain their principal residence within the state boundaries of Arizona. All Emergency Service Employees, except those holding a position in Fire, will arrive at the assigned or emergency work location within one (1) hour from notification to report to duty.
- Must have the ability to be contacted and to respond in a timely manner and be willing and able to perform emergency work on an evening, weekend, and 12-hour shift basis.
- Must be fully qualified on two of the four Solid waste CDL required collection’s vehicles:
- ASL (Automated Side-loader)
- FEL (Front-end Loader) – Commercial Collections Truck
- Rear Loader (Bulky Truck)
- Roll-off

Our total compensation package includes best-in-class benefits and an annual salary of $47,049.60 - $70,574.40 for the Equipment Operator II role, and $49,608.00 - $74,422.40 for the Equipment Operator III role, based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
