Summary
Leads, plans, coordinates, and schedules department activities and duties, as assigned by the Public Works Director. Leads and participates in the performance of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled labor in the Participates as a leader or a working member of crew in the operations and maintenance tasks to maintain the infrastructure within the City, including streets, storm & sanitary sewer, parks, sports fields, and facility maintenance. Prepares work site and ensures that work is performed in a safe and acceptable manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; however, other duties may be assigned. - Provides daily task assignments to the Public Works crew;
- Ensure safety rules are followed;
- Leads and participates in the maintenance, repair, improvements, and construction of concrete streets, approaches, sidewalks, swales, and curbs throughout the City;
- Leads and participates in construction, repair, patching, and crack sealing of all asphalt projects in the City;
- Responds to and participates in emergency service calls; assists with storm damage clean up and repairs, snow and ice removal, flood proofing, and other emergency events;
- Leads crews, develops, and initiates plan of action for emergency situations;
- Leads and participates in installation, removal, and replacement of traffic signs, street striping, and performs minor repairs and maintenance of traffic signals;
- Rotates as the on-call, after hours lead Maintenance Worker III, as assigned by the Director;
- Receives assignments and ensures materials, tools, and equipment are delivered to work sites in a timely manner;
- Leads and participates in building, vehicle, facility, and sanitary sewer cleaning, maintenance, repair, and construction and improvements;
- Operates truck with snowplow, salt spreader, mosquito fogger; operates dump truck, backhoe, roller, and other motorized equipment;
- Performs periodic inspections of city and park facilities to determine maintenance and necessary repairs;
- Estimates and orders materials and complies with purchasing policies; and
- Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties
Leads and performs functional supervision of Maintenance Workers II Maintenance Worker I, and Seasonal Employees. All supervisory responsibilities are performed in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
Education and Experience Required
High School Diploma or equivalent with four (4) years’ experience in public works, construction, or equipment operation. Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Tools, materials, methods, and practices used in the maintenance, repair, construction, and improvement of City infrastructure, facilities, and buildings;
- Public works construction standards, methods, and related regulatory guidelines including Missouri Department of Labor Safety standards; and
- Safe and efficient operation of a wide variety of tools and equipment under hazardous and emergency situations.
Ability to:
- Obtain DOT Reasonable Suspicion Certification;
- Work independently and exercise sound judgement;
- Responds to public inquiries, comments, and actions; provides information and refers to appropriate City representative;
- Safely operate City equipment, including but not limited to, backhoe, skid steer, man lift, forklift, dump truck;
- Perform construction activities during emergency and non-emergency conditions;
- Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills working within a crew;
- Acquire and maintain a chemical applicator’s license;
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
- Respond effectively to inquiries and complaints from the public and present information in one-on-one situations;
- Perform basic math functions;
- Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables, mostly standardized, but some unique situations;
- Perform manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse environmental conditions;
- Instruct other employees in proper methods, practices, and uses of materials, tools, and equipment in a variety of maintenance and construction activities;
- Communicate effectively with residents, business owners and City Officials;
- Work evenings and weekends as needed;
- Perform job responsibilities during emergency conditions; and
- Promote a positive representation of the City of Fenton.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Up to $27.46 per hour
