Join the Eureka Community Services team as a softball umpire this season! Games start in early June and run through mid-September. Games are played Monday-Thursday nights at 6:30PM, 7:45PM, and 9:00PM. Games take place at Kennedy & Hartman Fields in Eureka. Men’s and Coed leagues are available. Staff work 3 games per night. 

Paper applications may also be obtained in-person from the Adorni Center at 1011 Waterfront Drive in Eureka.

DEFINITION 
Under general supervision, assists in the planning and coordination of various sports programs including but not limited to; Hoopsters Youth Basketball and adult Basketball and Softball; provides responsible customer service to program participants and members. Recreation Officials are responsible for officiating and supervising sports games. These duties include directing players and coaches, enforcing all game rules, checking on field conditions and assisting in completing accident/incident reports and other necessary forms.  

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 
Receives general supervision from assigned management and/or supervisory Community Services personnel. May exercise technical and functional direction over assigned part-time temporary staff. 

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS 
This is the temporary part-time class in the Recreation Division responsible for officiating assigned sports activities at the Adorni Center and/or Municipal Auditorium, Kennedy/Hartman ball fields or Cooper Gulch fields and other Recreation center/sites; duties include site sweeps (both indoors and outdoors), changing of equipment when needed, set up and breakdown of equipment, ongoing cleanliness of bathrooms.
Recreation Official I:  This is the entry-level position for officials new to the sport and require more training.
Recreation Official II: This is the intermediate level position for officials who have some experience.
Recreation Official III: This is the experienced level position for officials that have several years of experience at differentiating levels of play.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)

  • Direct players and coaches, enforce all game rules and assist in completing accident/incident reports and other necessary forms.
  • Communicate with participants concerning rules and sportsmanship.
  • Ensure participants are registered for respective teams, keeps official score of games, if applicable.
  • Open and close assigned recreational facility; secure, maintain and clean facility; prepare program sites for various programs and activities, including setting up and taking down equipment.
  • Complete ongoing maintenance tasks such as; ensuring equipment is in good working order, maintain and stock bathrooms as necessary. 
  • Assist in compliance with relevant health and safety laws and guidelines. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of: 
  • Sports assigned to officiate; including scorekeeping and rules.
  • Safety principles and practices, including basic First Aid and CPR.
  • Basic principles of record keeping for sports programs.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of in-person customer service 

Ability to:
  • Maintain recreational facilities and equipment in a clean, safe and secure manner.
  • Maintain composure when presented with sometimes stressful environments.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic First Aid and/or CPR. 
  • Maintain and update record keeping as it applies to games.
  • Compose correspondence and reports from brief instructions.
  • Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent and timely manner.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone and in writing. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Multi-task in fast-paced environment.
  • Meet physical demands of prolonged standing, running, bending.
  • Adhere to department policies and procedures concerning safety, accident/incident reporting, inappropriate behavior, etc.
Education and Experience: 
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 
  • Work experience officiating various sports programs or closely related program and/or
  • Participation in similar programming through school or community programs and/or
  • Volunteer service in related programs
  • Experience providing responsible customer service is preferred.
Requirements:
  • Must successfully pass DOJ background test if working with youth.
  • Must present negative TB test if working with youth.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aide certification within 2 months of hire.
  • Valid California class C driver’s license may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities and basic facility maintenance. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects necessary to perform job functions.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS 
Employees work primarily in a variety of settings including indoor and outdoor recreational facility environments with moderate to high noise levels, differing temperature conditions and possible exposure to hazardous physical substances. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS 
Is required to work various day, evening and weekend shifts, as assigned.
