This position is responsible for participating in the mechanical repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Perform engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, transmission, and other repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on pumps, valves, lighting systems, and computer systems on various emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance functions.
- Perform a variety of engine diagnostic procedures.
- Perform emergency roadside repairs as required; troubleshooting failures at job sites.
- Perform service and maintenance on gasoline powered generators and small engine equipment.
- Perform welding repairs and modifications.
- Maintain work orders; enters supplies and parts used for the completion of work orders.
- Order parts and supplies as needed.
- Test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure that the work meets specifications and legislated regulations.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Fleet Maintenance Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

- Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of work safety principles.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Knowledge of inventory management principles.
- Knowledge of city purchasing policies and procedures.
- Skill in the operation, diagnosis and repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in problem solving, prioritizing, planning, and interpersonal relations.

- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the department, usually interpreted to require at least one to two years of related experience.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
