POSITION SUMMARY
The Industrial Pretreatment Specialist plays a key role in protecting the wastewater treatment system, public health, and the environment by ensuring commercial and industrial facilities comply with local, state, and federal pretreatment regulations. In this role, you will work directly with businesses and partner agencies to conduct inspections, manage industrial wastewater permits, evaluate compliance through sampling and data analysis, and help solve complex wastewater challenges. Industrial Pretreatment Specialist I: Supports the Industrial Pretreatment Program by conducting inspections of commercial and industrial facilities, assisting with permit administration, and verifying compliance with wastewater regulations through sampling and documentation. Maintains program databases, responds to inquiries from businesses, and helps implement sector control programs and other regulatory requirements. This level focuses on developing technical knowledge of pretreatment regulations, inspection processes, and program operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Industrial Pretreatment Specialist I
- Conduct inspections of commercial and industrial facilities to verify compliance with pretreatment regulations and local ordinances.
- Support sector control programs such as Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) and Petroleum Oil, Grease, and Sand (POGS), including scheduling and performing inspections.
- Assist with industrial user identification and characterization activities, including reviewing Industrial Waste Surveys and maintaining program databases.
- Collect wastewater samples and document compliance findings in accordance with EPA sampling methods.
- Respond to inquiries from businesses and assist with outreach, training, and program implementation activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor’s degree with major/minor course work in a scientific field related to the job.

Required Driver’s License: Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Successful candidates will typically demonstrate:
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment systems and industrial pretreatment principles.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to wastewater discharges.
- Ability to conduct facility inspections and interpret technical materials such as blueprints, piping diagrams, and process flow diagrams.
- Experience collecting or evaluating environmental samples and maintaining chain-of-custody documentation.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills to interpret compliance data and support regulatory determinations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with databases or GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS) is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed mostly in the office with some field work. The employee will be exposed to various weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold conditions. The employee will be exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise; solvents, grease, oils; slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Confined space entry may be required. Work is performed in an office, outside, and in an industrial environment. Occasional off hour response is required for this position.
ANNUAL SALARY
Specialist I: $66,744 - $100,116 annually
