What are the responsibilities and job description for the Land Management Grounds Worker position at City of Elgin?
Under supervision, performs activities necessary for the care and upkeep of grounds for City parks, open space and other facilities; maintains and makes repairs as necessary on all peripheral buildings, structures and equipment.
· Performs maintenance activities required for the care and upkeep of grounds including but not limited to the following: mows and trims, rakes leaves, seeds and fertilizes areas, lays sod, prunes and trims trees, plants trees and various plant material, applies pesticide, repairs, maintains, and assists in irrigation system installation and maintenance
· Performs maintenance on buildings and structures involving painting, basic carpentry, and other minor repairs
· Paints and repairs park benches, trash containers, play ground equipment, bleachers, picnic tables, tee markers, grave site equipment, and related items
· Performs snow and ice removal activities from roadways, sidewalks, parking areas, ice rinks
· Performs other duties as required or assigned.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for reading and preparing written or computer reports, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
This role requires:
·Working experience in grounds maintenance activities
·Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in ground maintenance operations;
·Working knowledge of materials, tools and procedures used in building and facility maintenance and repair; elementary knowledge of horticulture relative to the care and grooming of grounds, trees, shrubs and other plant material
·Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity to operate, maintain and repair essential equipment
·Ability to operate vehicles and equipment proficiently
·Ability to use standard grounds maintenance equipment such as rotary push mowers, shovels, hedge clippers, etc
·Ability to apply pesticides and herbicides according to prescribed procedures
·Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers, and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a high school diploma or a GED.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires possession of a valid Illinois Class A CDL Driver's License within 6 months of hire. City sponsored/provided training.
- Requires possession of a valid Illinois Pesticide Operators License within 6 months of accepting the role
- Must submit to and pass a physical, drug test, background check and DMV review

Salary : $55,921 - $79,886
