What are the responsibilities and job description for the Theater Technician position at City of East Lansing?
Provides technical audio/video equipment support to the Hannah Community Center, including the Albert A. White Performing Arts Theatre. Performs sound and video setup, configuration, and operations. Maintains lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music, speaking events, and special projects. Assists guest designers and clients, providing technical guidance, equipment lists, and theater drawings. Meets with rental clients to discuss needs, monitors, maintains, and repairs theater equipment, including lighting, sound, seating, curtains, and stage facilities, Coordinates setup and teardown of audio equipment as assigned. Advises on technical specifications, costs, and equipment usage while ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music, speaking events, and projects in the theater. Assists guest designers and clients with technical matters.
- Provides equipment lists, lighting and sound paperwork, and theater drawings upon request.
- Meets with potential theater rental clients on a regular basis to discuss their needs and expectations. Attends production meetings and technical rehearsals to supervise the technical mounting of productions.
- Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound equipment, and other theater assets. Conducts routine maintenance, preventive care, and repair.
- Performs general maintenance and upkeep of the theater space, to include replacing and/or moving light fixtures; fixing theater seating; maintaining cyclorama, curtains and stage skirt; and re-painting the stage.
- Conducts set up and tear down of audio equipment for Boards & Commission meetings and special events.
- Advises production managers, lighting, and sound designers on technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for an individual show or performance. Supervises and assists with stage management.
- Maintains knowledge of safety protocols related to theater use. Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the theater and the Hannah Community Center's audio-visual assets, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
Performs related work as required.
COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES:
Knowledge of:
- Theater rigging systems and repair; theater equipment and stock

- Standard computer applications (such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications)

- Identifying and resolving issues with equipment
- Communicating effectively with city staff, contractors and clients

- Operate basic office equipment and software, such as computers and Microsoft Office products

- Evaluate and maintain equipment and perform routine maintenance checks
- Operate assigned equipment; requires general manual dexterity, adequate vision, hearing and speech abilities
- Climb, stoop, kneel, and lift, including climbing a 12-foot ladder

Qualifications
6 months of training beyond High School in Theater Design, Stage Management, A/V systems, and/or technical productions; 3 to 5 years’ experience providing theatre design, A/V, and technical support.
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.
Special Requirements
Office environment, relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Physical effort requirements include exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects. This position may be occasionally exposed to elevated noise levels above 85 decibels, moving mechanical parts, and/or fumes or airborne particles.
Job Details
