The East Lansing Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. We are seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals to join our dedicated team, committed to providing exceptional emergency services to our community.

OVERVIEW

This skilled position responds to emergencies to protect life, property, and mitigate environmental hazards. Duties include fire suppression, Haz-Mat response, rescue, advanced life support treatment/transport, and general maintenance/custodial care of facilities, grounds, apparatus, tools, and equipment. This position is both physically and mentally challenging. Ongoing training is required and offered by the department to develop and maintain necessary skills, proficiencies, certifications, and licensing. There is potential in this position to be offered further training in technical rescue disciplines and advanced Haz-Mat. This position also involves participation in community events to positively represent the department and City. The City of East Lansing also welcomes applications from certified State of Michigan Paramedics who do not currently possess Firefighter I & II certification. Firefighter I & II training will be sponsored by the City following hire. The City of East Lansing will also consider applications from certified EMT-B candidates. Selected candidates may be hired contingent upon successfully obtaining State of Michigan Paramedic licensure within a timeframe established by the Department.

  • Lateral movement for time-in-grade applied.
  • Overtime compensation is calculated at 1.5 times base pay.
  • Overtime opportunities include shift coverage, Michigan State University athletics, and other first-aid event coverage.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • The work schedule consists of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty.
  • A “Kelly Day” (assigned shift day off) every 7th shift.
  • The average work week is 48 hours.
  • The shift schedule is 0730-0730, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.

Be at least 18 years of age.

Valid Michigan driver’s license with no restrictions or suspensions.

Certified State of Michigan Paramedic preferred. EMT-B candidates will also be considered. Candidates who do not possess Firefighter I & II certification at the time of hire may be hired contingent upon successful completion of Firefighter I & II training sponsored by the City following hire. Certified State of Michigan Paramedic

ACLS and BLS card holder.

Certified in Haz-Mat Operations

Physically and medically qualified to fulfill duties of the position as determined by a medical examination and drug screen performed by a physician of the City’s choice. Successful completion of a written, practical, and ability test is required to be eligible for the interview process.
