Description

Bring your knowledge of the game to the court as an Adult Volleyball Referee with City of Durango Parks and Recreation. You’ll officiate adult league and tournament matches, making timely and consistent decisions while helping keep play organized, competitive, and safe. This is an opportunity to put your understanding of volleyball rules and officiating techniques to work while communicating with team captains, players, and other officials throughout the match. We are hiring both certified and non-certified officials.

  • Non-Certified Adult Volleyball Referee: Starting at $18.00/hour
  • Certified Adult Volleyball Referee: Starting at $22.00/hour

Essential Job Duties

What You’ll Do in This Role:

  • Officiate adult volleyball matches for league and tournament play, applying current rules and officiating practices consistently
  • Attend preseason in-service training and stay current on volleyball rules, rule changes, and officiating information
  • Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to complete all assigned game-day responsibilities
  • Meet with team captains before matches to review ground rules, unusual circumstances, and any facility hazards
  • Monitor player conduct and sportsmanship while remaining impartial and professional
  • Make timely, unbiased decisions throughout each match and communicate clearly with players, captains, and other officials
  • Check the playing area and equipment for safety hazards and report concerns to the site supervisor or Recreation Supervisor
  • Assist with volleyball court set-up and take-down as needed
  • Report problems involving captains, players, coaches, spectators, or facility conditions to the site supervisor or Recreation Supervisor
  • Assist with game cancellations when necessary
  • Help maintain a safe environment for staff, participants, and spectators
  • Return any issued equipment and represent the City of Durango professionally and respectfully

Minimum Qualifications

You Have:

  • Knowledge of volleyball rules, gameplay, and officiating techniques
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with players, team captains, other officials, and Parks and Recreation staff
  • Previous officiating experience is preferred
  • Volleyball referee or official certification is preferred, but not required

You Will Succeed in This Role If You:

  • Remain impartial and consistent when making decisions during matches
  • Come prepared, arrive on time, and follow through on all assigned responsibilities
  • Maintain strong awareness of player safety, court conditions, and match activity
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, including when addressing disagreements or concerns
  • Work effectively with other officials and Parks and Recreation staff
