JOB SUMMARY

The Sign Shop Technician fabricates, installs, repairs, and maintains traffic control, street name, wayfinding, and municipal signage throughout the city. This position ensures all signs and pavement markings meet federal, state, and local standards (including MUTCD) to promote safe and efficient transportation and wayfinding. The technician also supports special events, downtown initiatives, and departmental needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Fabricate, install, replace, and maintain traffic control signs, street name signs, regulatory signs, warning signs, and wayfinding signage.
  • Operate sign-making equipment including plotters, cutters, laminators, and presses.
  • Prepare sign blanks and apply reflective sheeting, lettering, and graphics.
  • Install and repair signposts, poles, brackets, and mounting hardware.
  • Inspect City signage to ensure visibility, condition, reflectivity, and compliance with MUTCD standards.
  • Install and maintain pavement markings including striping, symbols, crosswalks, and legends.
  • Perform utility locates (811) for City-owned utilities and infrastructure; mark facilities in accordance with Georgia 811 and APWA color code standards.
  • Review locate tickets, maps, and as-built records to determine utility locations and clear excavation requests within required timeframes.
  • Respond to work orders, damage reports, and citizen requests regarding signage.
  • Maintain inventory of sign materials, hardware, and supplies.
  • Operate bucket truck, striping equipment, and hand/power tools safely.
  • Support traffic control setups for road work, detours, parades, festivals, and special events.
  • Remove graffiti or damaged signage and replace as needed.
  • Maintain records of installed, replaced, and inventoried signs and markings.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Public Works, Police, and contractors on signage needs.
  • Follow safety practices and traffic control standards (MUTCD).
  • Participate in emergency and after-hours response (storm damage, traffic incidents, road closures).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED required. 

One (1) to three (3) years of experience in sign fabrication, traffic sign installation, pavement marking, utility locating, construction, public works, or a related field preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and traffic control principles.
  • Knowledge of sign fabrication materials, reflective sheeting, mounting systems, and pavement marking applications.
  • Knowledge of utility locating practices, underground infrastructure, and Georgia 811 requirements.
  • Skill in operating sign-making equipment, hand tools, power tools, striping equipment, and bucket trucks.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, utility records, work orders, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to perform accurate measurements and maintain detailed records.
  • Ability to work safely in and around traffic and construction zones.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and respond to urgent requests and emergencies.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Georgia Driver’s License; Incumbent must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is moderate to heavy physical work and requires balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity. Employee is regularly exposed to moving traffic, construction sites, loud noise, dust, equipment vibration, and other hazards associated with public works operations. Position may require occasional evening, weekend, holiday, and emergency response work. Employee is subject to call-out and after-hours response for emergencies, storm events, traffic incidents, and other departmental needs.
