JOB SUMMARY
The Commercial Driver Operator performs all heavy equipment operations for the Public Services Department. This includes operation of sanitation equipment such as Front-End Loader Truck, Roll-Off Truck, Automated and Rear load Trucks, and related equipment to provide prompt service to all Commercial, Industrial, and Residential customers of the City Sanitation Department as well as all City Street Maintenance equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates assigned equipment in the maintenance and repair of City roads, streets, drainage systems, and sanitation services, including gasoline- and diesel-powered automotive and heavy equipment, light to medium duty trucks, tractors, excavators, packers, rollers, roll-off trucks, K-boom trucks, front-end loaders, skid steers, and other related machinery, tools, and power equipment.
- Safely operates sanitation collection vehicles along assigned residential and commercial routes, which may involve high-volume collection, manual handling of containers in special circumstances, and walking extended distances to retrieve refuse.
- Performs daily pre- and post-operation inspections of Public Services vehicles and equipment; documents and reports missing equipment, safety concerns, and required repairs.
- Checks, maintains, and performs routine servicing of equipment, trucks, trailers, compactors, and power tools to ensure safe and efficient operation; cleans and washes assigned vehicles on a regular schedule.
- Operates sanitation trucks to collect refuse, recyclables, bulk items, and roll-off containers, and transports collected materials to designated disposal facilities.
- Oversees and coordinates the work of refuse collectors and laborers assigned to the vehicle; may provide on-the-job training and guidance to new or less experienced drivers and crew members to ensure safe operations and route efficiency.
- Maintains effective public relations with customers by responding professionally to service needs, complaints, and special circumstances, including managing challenging interactions with residents while maintaining service standards and safety.
- Collects fees in the form of checks or money orders for special pickups and ensures accurate documentation and reporting of transactions.
- Participates in the scheduling of sanitation routes, work assignments, and special services as directed; coordinates daily assignments with supervisors, sanitation accounts staff, and designated clerical personnel.
- Identifies and reports hazardous materials or unsafe conditions encountered during collection activities in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Completes required documentation related to daily activities, routes, inspections, incidents, and service records, and forwards information to supervision or clerical staff as required.
- Assists the Maintenance Department, Commercial Sanitation operations, and other Public Services functions as needed, including support during City events, seasonal operations, and emergency response activities such as storm cleanup, snow or ice control, and overnight emergency assignments.
- Performs assigned duties outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and inclement weather, while maintaining operational readiness.
- May be required to work after hours, weekends, holidays, or extended shifts based on operational or emergency needs.
- Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Valid Georgia CLASS “B” CDL Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires medium physical exertion and the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, and handle materials and equipment. The position requires hearing, visual acuity, mental acuity, and the ability to lift, push, pull, and reach objects repeatedly throughout the workday. Duties also require repetitive motion and sustained physical activity associated with operating commercial vehicles and sanitation or maintenance equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed outdoors and around heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, and machinery. The incumbent may be exposed to moving vehicles, mechanical hazards, noise, and varying weather conditions, and must work in environments where the risk of bodily injury to self, co-workers, or the public exists if safety procedures are not followed.
