Public Works Laborer

City of Dixon, Missouri

The City of Dixon is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join our Public Works Department as a full-time Public Works Laborer.

Pay: $16.00–$18.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

The Public Works Laborer performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, construction, and utility-related duties involving City streets, water and sewer systems, public facilities, and other City properties.

The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, good mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience operating equipment such as dump trucks, snowplows, lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, sewer equipment, and other light equipment is highly desirable.

This position works under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor and does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read water meters for monthly utility billing.
  • Routinely check water and sewer mains and assist with repairs to sewer lines and broken water mains.
  • Assist with tapping water mains for services and installing new water mains.
  • Assist with cleaning sewer lines using sewer jet and rodding equipment.
  • Assist with cleaning, repairing, and inspecting sewer lift stations.
  • Perform concrete finishing, pavement repair, and landscape finishing associated with utility excavation sites.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance and report larger repair needs to the Public Works Supervisor.
  • Respond to emergency calls and service requests, including sanitary sewer issues, lift station problems, water main breaks, system leaks, and other public works emergencies.
  • Participate in the City's rotating after-hours on-call schedule.
  • Operate City equipment including dump trucks, snowplows, lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and other light equipment.
  • Assist with sweeping and maintaining City streets.
  • Assist with painting curbs and striping parking spaces and crosswalks.
  • Haul and place replacement gravel for City streets and parking lots.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal from City streets, sidewalks, and parking lots.
  • Assist with general maintenance and upkeep of City properties and facilities.
  • Follow all applicable safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, residents, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a random drug test.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds frequently, 50–100 pounds occasionally, and over 100 pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Good hand and foot coordination.
  • Strong attention to detail and sound decision-making skills.

Preferred

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Missouri Water Treatment or Distribution certification/license.
  • Missouri Wastewater Treatment certification/license.
  • Previous experience in public works, water/sewer utilities, construction, equipment operation, or a related field.
  • Experience operating snowplows, dump trucks, sewer jetting equipment, chainsaws, lawn equipment, and other utility equipment.
  • General knowledge of safe work practices.

Work Schedule and Conditions

This is a full-time, permanent position with regular work hours. Occasional overtime is required for emergency situations, including water main breaks, sewer problems, severe weather, and snow removal.

The position participates in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dirt, dust, noise, water, wastewater, and other conditions associated with public works and utility maintenance.

Employees must be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, reach, and operate tools and equipment for extended periods.
