Wastewater Treatment Technician

PRIMARY ROLE
The Wastewater Treatment Technician serves as a vital member of the Wastewater Department. This position is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the wastewater treatment plant through technical maintenance and regular inspections. The incumbent will perform complex technical tasks under direct supervision while having the ability to suggest improvements to existing procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
· Facility Maintenance: Clean and maintain the wastewater plant facilities. Cut grass and maintain the perimeter around stations and the treatment plant.
· Station Repairs: Repair and maintain wastewater lift stations to ensure continuous operation.
· System Inspections: Conduct comprehensive video inspections of sewer mains to identify structural issues.
· Wastewater Lines: Regularly clean and maintain gravity sewer lines.
· Equipment Repair: Maintain and repair trash pumps and diesel generators to support system reliability. Operate vacuum truck for clean out activities.
· Public Response: Directly interface with the public to ensure all concerns and potential issues with the wastewater system are addressed.
· Clerical Management: Complete routine clerical work related to records management and work order systems. Prepares reports for regulatory reporting agencies based on compliance data.
· Emergency Response: May be required to respond to emergency callouts and perform required maintenance and repairs.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Minimum Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED plus formal training; often requires achieving a certification or license.
· Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
· Required licenses or certifications as dictated by department rules and regulations.
Technical Competencies:
· Ability to operate specialized video inspection equipment for sewer mains.
· Proficiency in maintaining diesel generators and various trash pumps.
Soft Skills:
· Public Interaction: Regular communication with customers regarding service interruptions or backups.
· Leadership: Regularly serves as a lead worker, providing technical guidance and training to others.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
· Work Setting: Performance of duties is primarily outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, rain, and cold). Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and chemicals.
· Physical Effort: Ability to perform strenuous physical activities for extended periods, including bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching. Must be able to frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, or materials weighing up to 50 lbs., or more with assistance.
