General Summary
Grounds Maintenance Workers maintain city/county right-of-ways, parks, and facilities. Core duties include operating riding mowers, tractors, and string trimmers; performing pre-trip equipment inspections; clearing debris; and applying herbicides. The role requires heavy lifting and working outdoors in varying weather.
Core Responsibilities
Equipment Operation: Safely operate large tractors, slope mowers, zero-turn mowers, string trimmers, and edgers to maintain public right-of-ways, medians, and parks. Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine pre-trip inspections, fluid checks, blade sharpening, and minor mechanical adjustments to ensure equipment safety and readiness. Right-of-Way Clearing: Clear overgrown brush, weeds, and tall grass. Remove litter, debris, and fallen branches from mowing areas prior to cutting. Public Works Support: Assist with other general public works tasks, such as road repair, basic landscaping, snow removal, or work zone traffic control, depending on the season.Safety Compliance: Adhere to all traffic laws, city/county policies, and OSHA safety standards. Properly utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
Will also support the department's water utility service. Perform a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operate a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water/wastewater facilities and systems.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience operating commercial landscaping and heavy-duty mowing equipment is highly preferred.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Standing for long periods of time
- Stooping, bending, reaching, and walking on uneven or steep terrain
- The ability to lift up to 50 to 100 pounds with or without assistance.
- Willing to work outdoors in various extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)
- Be exposed to loud noise, dust, and exhaust fumes.
