Public Works Inspector & Asset Coordinator

General Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of Public Works, the Public Works Inspector / Asset Coordinator is responsible for inspecting, mapping, and maintaining records of City infrastructure, including water, wastewater, storm drainage, and street systems. The position supports asset management, GIS mapping, inspections, and other Public Works operations as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of water, sewer, storm drainage, streets, sidewalks, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform field verification and document infrastructure conditions.
  • Maintain and update GIS maps and asset databases.
  • Collect GPS and field data for new and existing public works assets.
  • Track, inventory, and maintain records of water and wastewater system assets.
  • Review construction projects and utility installations for compliance with City standards.
  • Prepare inspection reports, maps, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate with contractors, engineers, developers, and City staff.
  • Assist with emergency response and infrastructure-related operations.
  • Perform other duties and assistance to other city departments assigned by the Director of Public Works, Assistant Director of Public Works, or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience (5 years) in public works, utility systems, construction inspection, GIS, or asset management preferred.
  • TCEQ Class C Water Distribution License (Preferred)
  • TCEQ Wastewater Collections II License (Preferred)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and GIS-related software preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Federal, state, and local safety regulations and standards. State laws and codes relate to public works and compliance. Local codes and ordinances. Adhere to all departmental and City safety policies.

Public infrastructure systems, GIS mapping, and asset management.

Skilled in: Operating various types of equipment & office equipment, including calculators, cameras, tablet computers, computers, and video cameras. Effective communication, both oral and written.

Ability to:

Communicate professionally, tactfully, and effectively with the public, developers, coworkers, administrative staff, local agencies and members of City Council.

Professionally and respectfully handle difficult situations and reach a positive solution for all parties involved.

Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations.

Maintain accurate records, work independently, and read maps, plans, and construction drawings.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • Making observations
  • Reading and writing
  • Communicating with others
  • Operating assigned equipment.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include:

  • Exposure to dirt, fumes, extreme temperatures, noise, confined workspaces, and high workplaces
  • Standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Stooping, bending, reaching, crawling, or crouching for the performance of inspections and monitoring construction projects
  • Pushing, pulling, or lifting equipment or supplies used in inspecting construction activities (occasionally weighing up to 150 lbs.)
  • Work outside in various weather conditions as needed.
