Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm (Evening, weekend or hours adjustments may be required as job duties demand)
Salary Range: $33.02 - 34.08 / Hour USD


Role Overview

 

The Mechanic reports to the Fleet Manager and is responsible for performing skilled maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the City’s fleet of automotive and heavy equipment. This includes fire and police vehicles, snow removal equipment, construction vehicles, and other gasoline and diesel-powered machinery. The Mechanic ensures the safety, reliability, and performance of all assigned equipment through routine inspections, diagnostics, and repairs in accordance with industry standards and department policies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance and repair on gasoline and diesel-powered equipment including police and fire vehicles, loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, pothole patchers, sweepers, rollers, crack sealers, small engines, and more.
  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical issues including bearings, axle seals, brake systems, gears, suspension components, and more.
  • Rebuild, overhaul, or replace parts such as engines, water and fuel pumps, compressors, radiators, and air conditioning systems.
  • Rewire electrical systems and install police-specific equipment such as radios, lighting, and cages.
  • Maintain and repair hydraulic systems including line replacements and leak inspections.
  • Perform welding repairs on snow plows, spreader boxes, and v-boxes.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance including fluid checks, electrical system inspections, and exhaust system repairs.
  • Overhaul and tune large and small diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal operations as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of mechanical systems for automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Familiarity with Kentucky vehicle and equipment safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret repair manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and maintenance software.
  • Ability to operate and repair various tools and machinery including welders, hydraulic presses, battery testers, power washers, and drill presses.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for diagnosing complex mechanical problems.
  • Effective written and verbal communication to relay technical issues and provide guidance.

Abilities:

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform under pressure.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and established procedures.
  • Capacity to work independently and exercise sound judgment in completing tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret data, technical diagrams, and service reports accurately.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a two-year vocational/technical certification program in automotive and/or diesel repair
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Mechanic certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
  • Must possess or obtain a Kentucky Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air-brake endorsement prior to regular appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Diesel Mechanic is preferred.
  • Certification from the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification Commission.
  • Experience with electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle maintenance is preferred.

Language, Math, and Reasoning Skills

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, professional journals, and government regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present and explain information to others including management and operations staff.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to perform basic calculations involving fractions, percentages, and unit conversions.
  • Ability to interpret graphs and compute ratios and rates.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and judgment to carry out written, oral, or diagram instructions.
  • Ability to analyze and modify repair methods as necessary.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in diagnosing and resolving mechanical and technical issues.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift or move objects weighing 50 to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to recognize fluid characteristics such as color and odor to assess vehicle condition.
  • Requires visual acuity and hearing sufficient to detect mechanical issues, fluid leaks, and equipment performance.
