What does a P & R Facility Maintenance Technician II do?

The Parks and Recreation Facility Maintenance Technician II plays a crucial role within the City of Cortez's Parks and Recreation team, ensuring that facilities, particularly the Recreation Center, are safe, clean, and consistently well-maintained. This journey-level position requires expertise in diverse building trades and proficiency in managing pool chemical and mechanical systems. Responsibilities include performing general maintenance and repairs for various facility systems, such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, security, and audio-visual setups. In this role, you may also take on a senior or leadership position, guiding the facility maintenance team while ensuring the highest standards of operational excellence. Your work will have a direct impact on the community’s recreational experience, making it a rewarding opportunity for those passionate about facility maintenance and community service.

What you need to be successful

To excel as a Parks and Recreation Facility Maintenance Technician II with the City of Cortez, candidates must possess a diverse skill set tailored for the demands of facility maintenance. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with 3-5 years of journeyman-level experience in one or more building trades. Candidates should be adept at using tools and software relevant to maintenance tasks, showcasing their ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work effectively. Physical strength is necessary to endure long periods of manual labor, including tasks performed at heights using lifts, ladders, or scaffolding.

Strong supervisory skills are essential for delegating responsibilities to part-time staff while fostering positive working relationships with colleagues and the public. Moreover, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in following detailed instructions and possess a general knowledge of computers, with experience in pool chemical systems and the ability to attain a Certified Pool Operator status being a significant advantage. A valid Colorado driver’s license is also required to facilitate job duties effectively.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
  • Ability to physically withstand strain of performing manual tasks for long periods.
  • Ability to supervise and delegate work to part-time employees.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in repair and maintenance of the recreation center.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employee and general public.
  • Ability to work over thirty feet above ground from a movable person lift
  • ladder or scaffolding.
  • Ability to work unsupervised or independently for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have general knowledge of computers.
  • Must be a High school graduate or equivalent
  • journeyman-level (3-5 years) experience in one or more building trades. Experience operating pool chemical and mechanical systems and the ability to become a Certified Pool Operator or similar.
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license.
