Job Title: Animal Care Shelter Technician (Part-Time)

Department: Animal Care
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary
Salary Range: $15.00 – $18.75 per hour, dependent on qualifications

General Statement of Duties

The Animal Care Shelter Technician is responsible for caring for the animals in the Animal Care Facility, ensuring the cleanliness of the animal holding areas and all other areas of the facility. The Technician performs shelter care such as medicating, bathing, and microchipping animals, and may assist Animal Care Officers with euthanizing as needed. The position also assists the public with adoptions, surrenders, and relaying concerns for potential calls for service.


Essential Job Duties

  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of animal holding areas
  • Perform daily feeding and watering of shelter animals
  • Administer medications and basic medical care as needed
  • Assist in humane euthanizing of animals as authorized
  • Assist in unloading and checking in animals brought to the facility
  • Prepare and maintain required records
  • Assist the public with inquiries, including adoption and surrender processes
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
  • Use good judgment and make sound decisions in matters related to the job
  • Maintain punctual, regular, on-site attendance; be on call as needed for emergencies
  • Safeguard City property and report needed repairs
  • Work safely, wear protective equipment as required, and maintain a clean work environment
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding City business
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Education and Basic Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and the ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with graduation from high school or its equivalent
  • Ability to handle animals safely and effectively
  • Clear and valid Texas Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Successful completion of background checks, pre-employment medical/physical test(s), drug test, and driver’s license check
  • Certification as State of Texas Certified Euthanasia Technician or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment

Other Requirements

  • Knowledge of effective methods of controlling and containing domestic animals
  • Ability to humanely euthanize animals and dispose of them properly
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, departmental policy, rules, regulations, and law
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and skill in using office equipment and computer programs, including Microsoft Office and Animal Care Facility software
  • Ability to provide quality customer service with a courteous and professional demeanor
  • Availability for work before and after scheduled hours and for callback as needed

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, stand, walk, run, bend, reach, stretch, push, pull, and remain upright for extended periods
  • Lift or move objects weighing up to fifty pounds
  • Work outside in inclement weather including high and low temperatures, high humidity, rain, and snow
  • Work in enclosed spaces and around animals, animal waste, and allergens
  • Good hearing, listening, coordination, and ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to euthanize animals when required
