Job Title: Animal Care Technician (Full-Time)

Department: Animal Control
Location: 292 Spur 162, Jourdanton, TX 78026
Salary: $19.00 – Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 40 hours per week; includes weekends and holidays

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Kennel Manager, the Animal Care Technician supports daily animal care operations and ensures the comfort, safety, and cleanliness of all animals housed at Atascosa County Animal Control. This position is responsible for maintaining sanitary kennel conditions, feeding and exercising animals, monitoring their general health and behavior, and providing humane handling. The role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, fosters, and rescue partners.

Essential Duties:

  • Prepare and set up animal kennels and related equipment for cage change-outs and newly arriving animals according to established procedures.
  • Feed, water, and exercise animals in designated work areas.
  • Observe animals for general physical condition, signs of illness, disease, stress, or behavioral concerns, and report findings to the Supervisor.
  • Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely as required.
  • Ensure the comfort, safety, and well-being of all shelter animals at all times.
  • Clean, rinse, scrub, and disinfect kennels, hallways, floors, walls, water dishes, food bowls, and related equipment to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment such as chemical mixers, hose units, and steam machines and report any issues promptly.
  • Monitor supply levels and notify the Supervisor of needed replenishments in a timely manner.
  • Maintain clean, orderly, and sanitized work areas and complete required documentation.
  • Provide accurate information and friendly, professional service to the public and co-workers in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers, fosters, and rescue representatives.
  • Provide weekend and holiday coverage as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for prolonged periods
  • Ability to perform sustained physical activity and stand for up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
  • Will be required to work weekends, holidays, and off-hours.
  • May perform tasks involving exposure to blood, bodily fluids, animal tissues, zoonotic diseases, loud noise levels, chemicals used for sanitation, extreme temperatures, and various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work directly with animals with no preexisting allergies to animals, hair, or dander.
  • Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including exposure to animals, animal waste, extreme temperatures, and potentially hazardous conditions. Use of personal protective equipment is required.
