Code Enforcement Inspector: Conducts routine inspections and investigates complaints to ensure compliance with the City codes, ordinances, regulations, and laws pertaining to property maintenance and zoning.
Examples of Duties
- Conducts routine residential and commercial property to ensure compliance with City codes, ordinances, regulations and laws pertaining to property maintenance and zoning.
- Performs inspections for zoning compliance and conditions of approval for the City.
- Inspects and enforces all city code violations affecting residential and commercial areas to include, but not limited to, inoperable vehicles, tall grass and weeds, exterior storage of trash, objects, and equipment not intended for exterior use, and other violations affecting residential and commercial areas.
- Issues written warnings and notices of violations as necessary on behalf of the Zoning Administrator. Prepares written correspondence for property maintenance and zoning matters, as assigned.
- Manages enforcement contracts and ensures vendors fulfill duties as approved by the City, and ensures renewal to avoid a lapse of service, as assigned.
- Investigates and collects information on reports of potential property maintenance and zoning regulations and violations.
- Prepares reports on property maintenance and zoning matters, as assigned.
- Reports suspected violations of the Uniform Statewide Building Code to the Building Official for evaluation.
- Maintains records of inspections and enforces violation correction to include nuisance abatement and/or court action.
- Testifies in court on certain cases and/or zoning issues.
- Addresses public and professional inquiries.
- Other duties as required.
Education & Experience
- Two years of college or Associate’s Degree and at least three years directly related experience; or
- A Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years directly related experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possess a Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Certified Zoning Official (CZO) designation by the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials is desirable.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25 and 50 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, and dexterity.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
Salary : $43,420 - $77,111
