The City of College Park, MD, is currently seeking a student studying Environmental Science, Agriculture, or a related field for a Summer Intern position (32 hours per week) in our Public Works Department. We are seeking a self-starter who can leverage existing resources and manage them effectively with minimal direction or supervision. The Internship position, while under the direct supervision and direction of the City Arborist or Public Works Director, will assist the City Arborist with planning tree-planting projects, map creation, and other projects assisting the GIS Coordinator. An ideal candidate will be able to leverage existing knowledge to align with City operations and resources, ensuring they fit well in their role supporting the Department of Public Works.

Job Duties
- Work with the arborist to schedule and meet with prospective homeowners for pre-planning meetings.
- Create materials from web sources regarding tree species and characteristics.
- Utilize ArcGIS Pro to create maps for tree planting projects and a story page.
- Maintain records utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
- Create, validate, and maintain geospatial information, including land/property features, utility features, and transportation features, and the attribution of each.
- Assist the GIS Coordinator with data management. Some potential projects entail data for streetlights, sidewalk conditions, and refuse cart inventory. Some field work is possible.
- Provide programmatic support to city engineering, public works, and planning offices as needed regarding data handling, cartographic creation and support, and other tasks as assigned.
- Be currently enrolled as an Undergraduate or Graduate Student at the University of Maryland in Environmental Science, Geography, Agriculture, or a related field.
- Ability to effectively communicate with residents about tree planting.
- Ability to use basic cartographic programs to produce maps.
- Ability to collect other data as needed for public works projects.
- Fluent knowledge of Core Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to effectively communicate with residents about scheduling and tree planting.
- It would be beneficial if the intern had some knowledge of Maryland tree species.
- Has the ability to utilize ArcGIS Pro to create maps.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access, specifically it's visual report design components, or ArcGIS Reports functionality.
- Critical eye for graphic design and attention to detail.

- $25.00/hr. for Graduate Students
