DEFINITION
Under supervision organizes, implements, leads and monitors a variety of community recreation programs and activities and performs related duties as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this entry level recreation classification lead and participate in a variety of recreation programs and activities. Incumbents report to the Recreation Supervisor, and may also receive direction from the Recreation Coordinator or from Recreation Specialists. Positions in this class perform work in accordance with established instructions.  Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision.  Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress.  Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to their supervisor for instructions.  Incumbents are expected to maintain records, equipment and facilities and are responsible to ensure that regulations and rules are followed for all recreational activities.  Incumbents may coordinate the activities of part-time/temporary staff and volunteers.

Under supervision, organizes and leads various sports, games and craft activities for children, teens and adults at Clovis area playgrounds, the Recreation Center, Skate Park, Batting Range and other community recreation facilities; leads youth field trips, teaches and leads teen or adult indoor and outdoor sports such as inline hockey, skateboarding, basketball, volleyball, dance, tumbling and soccer; conducts special community recreation events; organizes recreation supplies and equipment; maintains equipment and facilities to ensure they are clean and in working order; operates a cash register, receives payments for programs, makes change and balances the cash drawer; receives and reviews participant registration forms; completes incident and participation reports; leads the activities of part-time/temporary staff and volunteers; work weekends and evenings and performs related work as required.

LICENSE REQUIRED

  • Possession of a valid California class "C" driver's license and a good driving record.

  • Possession of valid First Aid and CPR certificates, or obtain certificate within three months of hire.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

  • Completion of six (6) units of college-level courses in recreation, child development, education, child psychology, leadership, sports leadership, or a related field.

And

Experience:

  • One (1) year of recreation leadership experience.
Work Schedule:
  • This position requires working Tuesday through Friday from approximately 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • Modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in coordinating, developing and implementing community recreation programs;
  • Common recreational and social needs of youth and adult groups;
  • Principles and practices of group leadership;
  • Laws, regulations, and rules affecting the provisions of recreation programs;
  • Knowledge and ability to provide participatory leadership in at least one of the following: skateboarding, baseball/softball and other youth sports, non-competitive games, playground games, crafts; or supervision of adult sports activities;
  • Safety precautions utilized in recreational activities.
Ability to:
  • Assist in the development of a wide variety of recreation programs suited to the needs of the community;
  • Administer first aid and CPR;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Interpret and explain policies and procedures;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Coordinate, train, monitor and assess program aides and volunteers;
  • Organize, monitor, schedule, and lead a variety of recreational activities and programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Strength: Medium work-occasional lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50-100 pounds maximum; with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; ability to lead and participate in physically demanding athletic/recreational activities; ability to work scheduled shifts and work outdoors.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date.  All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position.  Those candidates who best meet the needs of the operations may be invited to participate in an oral examination that will be weighted 100%.  Applicants receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year.  As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California driver's license and good driving record will be required prior to hire.  Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
 
The examination may consist of questions relative to knowledge of modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in coordinating, developing and implementing community recreation programs; common recreational and social needs of youth and adult groups; principles and practices of group leadership; laws, regulations, and rules affecting the provisions of recreation programs; knowledge and ability to provide participatory leadership in at least one of the following; skateboarding, baseball/softball and youth sports, non-competitive games, playground games, crafts; or supervision of adult sports activities; and safety precautions utilized in recreational activities.  The examination may also contain questions regarding the ability to assist in the development of a wide variety of recreation programs suited to the needs of the community; fully demonstrate and participate in physically demanding athletic/recreational activities; administer first aid and CPR; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; interpret, and explain policies and procedures; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; coordinate, train, monitor, and assess program leaders, volunteers, coaches and sport officials; work nights and weekends; and organize, monitor, schedule, and lead a variety of recreational activities and programs.
