Laborer I:
Nature of work:
This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual work.
Work of this class involves performance of routine unskilled manual labor tasks
and limited semi-skilled tasks in the carrying out of a variety of maintenance,
construction and service activities of city buildings, recreational facilities and
cemeteries. Assignments include the use of standard hand tools and power
operated devices. Work usually is performed under direct supervision although
assignments which are repetitive in nature, once learned, may be carried out
under general supervision. Work performance is checks in progress or upon
completion for desired results.
Illustrative Examples of Work:

Work on street maintenance and construction crews; smooth shoulders with hand
shovel; cleans out ditches; loads and unloads materials and equipment.
Serves as member of a street cleaning crew: picking up, sweeping or shoveling
dirt, trash, or debris from streets, curbs, or gutters into a vehicle.
Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks: cuts grass and weeds with hand
tools, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, cultivates, prunes, sprays, and trims plants
and shrubs, maintains playing fields and game courts.
Digs trenches, ditches, graves, and back-fills and compacts areas dug.
Assists in the installation and repair of traffic signs, paints markings on streets and
curbs; assists in constructing and erecting barricades.
Serves in a training capacity for positions of Laborer II where the full duties of the
position are more of a semi-skilled nature.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Desirable Knowledge, abilities and skills:
Ability to learn the use of hand and power tools incidental to assigned tasks.
Ability to learn the daily maintenance requirements of hand and power tools
required in performance of assigned tasks.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for
extended periods and at times under unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by
work assignments.
Knowledge of occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safety
precautions for the safe performance of the job.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
Desirable Education and Experience:
None Required. It is desirable to have some experience in the area of work
assignment.
