TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH I ENTRY SALARY:  $53,662.26   

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH II ENTRY SALARY:  $59,162.74  

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH III ENTRY SALARY:  $62,120.69


TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH I
Under general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician I skilled Electronic and Electrical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of traffic signal control devices, structures, networks for a Traffic Control System.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH II
Under general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician II performs and oversees highly skilled electronic and electrical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of the traffic signal control devices, structures, networks for a Traffic Signal System. Serves as a crew leader with subordinate or equal level technicians.
 
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECH III 

Under general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician III with expert proficiency performs and oversees skilled electronic and electrical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of the traffic signal control devices, structures, networks for a Traffic Signal System. Serves as a crew leader with subordinate or equal level technicians. 

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Constructs, installs, maintains, renovates, and repairs traffic signal control devices, structures, networks and associated electronic and electrical related components associated with the traffic control system of the city. 
  • Verifies, checks, and evaluates timings in controller to ensure good traffic flow; maintains and updates any vehicle detections.  
  • Maintains and monitors all equipment; cleans, checks proper voltage, evaluates field wiring, inspects signal head, performs cosmetic upkeep, and calculates quality of flow of traffic.
  • Handles, addresses, and responds to various trouble calls for damaged equipment, problematic mechanical components, or malfunctioning signal equipment.  
  • Uses, operates, and performs activities on computers, motor vehicles, tools, test equipment, and parts, to effectively perform assignments assuring the continued operation of the traffic control system.
  • Drafts, prepares, and maintains records, equipment, tools, and vehicles as needed.
  • Make signal timing changes with the guidance of Supervisors and engineering staff.
  • Performs standby or "on call" duty for after hour responses within one hour of call out; handles emergency situations on a rotating schedule.
  • Manages small, medium and large sized projects; communicates with supervisors, technicians, and other departments to coordinate day-to-day duties, tasks, and projects. 
  • Oversees and assists with the training of all Traffic Signal Technicians levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 
Minimum Qualifications
 
Traffic Signal Tech I:
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
Certification from Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic or ability to obtain within one year of hire date.
Ability to obtain and maintain a forklift license within one year of hire date.
Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) for Traffic Signal Technician Level I or ability to obtain within one year of hire date.
Type: Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL based on area of assignment within one (1) year of hire.

Education and Experience:

Associate's degree in electronics PLUS two (2) years of experience in electronics or electric work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Traffic Signal Tech II:
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level II Certificate is required and meets the position requirements of 3 years of traffic signal operations experience.
IMSA Traffic Signal Field Inspector I Certificate is required.
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Intermediate Temporary Maintenance of Traffic Certificate is required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator’s License within one (1) year of hire date.
Type: Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL based on area of assignment within one (1) year of hire.

Education and Experience:

Associate’s Degree in Electronics AND three (3) years’ experience in traffic signal tech work, electronics, electric work, or network technology; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.   


Traffic Signal Tech III:
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level III Certificate and meets IMSA & Position requirements of 5 years of traffic signal operations experience.
IMSA Traffic Signal Field Inspector I Certificate is required.
Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Intermediate Temporary Maintenance of Traffic Certificate is required. 
Ability to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator’s License within one (1) year of hire date.
Type: Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A, A5, or B CDL based on area of assignment within one (1) year of hire.  
 
Education and Experience:

Associate’s Degree in Electronics AND five (5) years’ experience in traffic signal tech work, electronics, electric work, or network technology; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future visa sponsorship. City of Clearwater will not sponsor employment visas (e.g., H-1B, or any other work authorization status).

Knowledge of  
  • ITE – Traffic Engineering Manual
  • Advanced knowledge of computer networking to include LAN, WAN.
  • Install & run software related to traffic signals, devices, and the signal system
  • Occupational hazards, principles, and standards
  • Tools, equipment, and materials
  • Principles and techniques of electronic technology relating to traffic systems.
  • Advanced electrical principles and practices including safety standards
  • Basic understanding of National Electrical Code, MUTCD and NEMA standards.
  • Traffic control devices, design standards, and other manuals provided by FDOT
  • Department policies and protocols
  • Engineering plans and specifications
  • Providing utility locates for traffic operations
  • Traffic preemption devices. 
 
Skill in – 
  • Understanding drawings, sketches, charts, and other illustrative materials
  • Able to interpret, create, update engineering drawings, schematics, and diagrams
  • Establishing and supporting good relationships
  • Dealing tactfully with the public
  • Operating a computer with advanced proficiency 

Salary : $53,662 - $62,121
