GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to perform manual work and operate light equipment associated with various installation, construction, maintenance, and repair projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Performs manual work functions associated with highway construction, maintenance and repair projects which may include repairing roads/asphalt, patching holes, clearing debris, mowing rights-of-way, flagging traffic, and trimming trees away from the road.

2. Performs manual work building/maintaining drainage systems which may include digging/constructing/repairing ditches, installing/repairing pipe, clearing drainage obstructions, and clearing ditches/gutters.

3. Performs manual work constructing and maintaining sidewalks and city parking lots which may include laying forms, mixing and pouring concrete.

4. Performs manual tasks associated with landscaping, groundskeeping, and maintenance of city properties which may include mowing, edging, weed-eating, spraying pesticides and herbicides and other general landscape duties.

5. Operates light equipment such as tractors, backhoes, chainsaws, mowers, and weed-eaters.

6. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of self and others.

7. Assists animal control by moving animals out of roadways and picking up stray animals.

8. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; notifies supervisor of needed repairs.

9. Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, other departments, city officials, property owners, contractors, engineers, utility companies, local/state/federal agencies, vendors/suppliers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

10. Performs other miscellaneous tasks as needed such as digging and covering graves, hanging street banners and signs, assisting with set up and take down of special events, etc.

11. Responds to emergency situations such as severe weather events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of the layout of the City, including streets and utilities
  • Knowledge of safety procedure, practices, and equipment
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment within the scope of responsibility
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
  • Must be able to meet regular attendance requirements
  • Must be able to be on-call and respond to emergency situations including nights and weekends
  • Must be able to drive to assigned locations
  • Must be physically able to move about on construction work sites and under adverse field conditions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; one year of experience in light equipment operation and maintenance and/or performing manual labor or construction/maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Alabama driver license. An Alabama Commercial Driver License (CDL) is preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical activities required for this position involve: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, talking, and hearing.

This position requires lifting: Up to and over 50 pounds frequently.

This position has the following special vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The following environmental conditions and hazards may be encountered while working in this position: Extreme heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions, fumes, odors, vibration, loud noise, confined spaces, infectious diseases and electrical hazards. This position is required to frequently work in close proximity to moving machinery/equipment and alongside moving traffic on roads.
