The City of Burnsville is recruiting for a Building Safety Inspector (Plumbing) position. We are seeking a candidate with strong plumbing knowledge and experience to perform plumbing inspections for residential and commercial construction projects. This recruitment may be used to fill either a Building Safety Inspector I or Building Safety Inspector II position based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, and certifications. As a Building Safety Inspector, you'll work with residents, businesses, contractors, and City departments to ensure compliance with construction codes, ordinances, and regulations. Salary Range:
  • Building Safety Inspector I: $46.35 - $57.81 hourly ($96,408 - $120,244.80 annually)
  • Building Safety Inspector II: $49.02 - $61.14 hourly ($101,961.60 - $127,171.20 annually)
This is a non-exempt (hourly) position. Starting salary will be based on qualifications and experience. This position is open until filled. Applications received by August 9, 2026 will receive first consideration.

The Building Safety Inspector I or II (Plumbing) Values People and Perspectives By:

  • Coordinating plan reviews and inspections with the Engineering, Planning, and Fire Departments.
  • Educating contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners on applicable codes to promote understanding and compliance with state and city regulations.

  • Stay informed about new equipment, materials, construction practices, and changes to building codes to ensure effective and consistent code administration.
  • Occasionally conduct property maintenance inspections and enforce the Property Maintenance Code.
They Expect the Best By:
  • Reviewing plans, specifications, and engineering calculations to ensure compliance with State Building, Energy, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, and Fuel Gas Codes.
  • Reviewing permit applications to ensure they accurately reflect the proposed work.

Minimum Qualifications – Building Safety Inspector I

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years of building inspection experience or experience in the construction trades.
  • State Limited Building Official or State Building Official certification required.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Commercial Building Inspector and Commercial Plans Examiner, or the ability to obtain both certifications within the first year of employment.
  • Must meet the minimum competency requirements for a Combination Inspector as established in Minnesota Rules Chapter 1301.1400.
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and mobile devices.
  • Local government experience preferred.
  • Strong technical skills with an educator's mindset preferred.

Minimum Qualifications – Building Safety Inspector II

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of seven years of building inspection experience and/or experience in the construction trades at the journeyperson or master level.
  • Certified as a Building Official or licensed as a Plumber or Electrician by the State of Minnesota.
  • Must possess a Commercial Building or Mechanical ICC certification, or obtain it within one year of employment.
  • Must possess a State delegation in one of the following areas: Building, Plumbing, Electrical, or Mechanical.
  • Must meet the minimum competency requirements for a Combination Inspector as established in Minnesota Rules Chapter 1301.1400.
  • Must have experience in commercial construction.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and mobile devices.
  • Strong technical skills with an educator's mindset preferred.

Salary : $96,408 - $127,171
