What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of Senior Services (PROVISIONAL) (COMM SERV) position at City of Buffalo?
An incumbent to a position in this class performs duties under the supervision of the Commissioner or a designee. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, with some leeway for exercising independent judgment where no established guidelines are set.
The incumbent shall also assist in coordinating and administering the City’s senior citizen programs to effectuate the purpose of the department. He/she shall assist in developing and administering the division’s policies and procedures.
Evaluates and assesses the needs of senior citizens and the effectiveness of programs, agencies or organizations serving or having the potential to serve the senior population.
Develops and oversees the implementation of in-service training programs for staff and volunteer workers;
Functions in a confidential capacity in the performance of duties as directed by the Commissioner and or Deputy Commissioner;
Researches, compiles, analyzes and verifies data and pertinent information in relation to all activities of the department;
Makes recommendations on how to solve problems, and present creative solutions to issues concerning senior citizens;
Analyzes operations and operating needs and advises department heads on findings;
Assists in the preparation of data for presentations as required;
Reviews documents for completeness and accuracy;
Maintains confidential records and reports;
Performs a wide variety of tasks as required to assist the Commissioner and or designee in carrying out his/her duties.
Maintains liaison with City of Buffalo Civil Service Administration to assess recruitment problems or suggestions relative to staff positions;
Attends conferences, workshops and seminars concerned with issues of senior citizens;
Participates in the conduction all interviews of potential staff candidates of the Division of Senior Services;
Assists in overseeing the implementation of programs and projects with the purpose of improving the status and condition of senior citizens;
Assists in preparing division’s budget and in analyzing all financial transactions;
Prepares reports and recommendations to the Director of Senior Services;
Performs related duties as deemed necessary by the Commissioner of Community Services or Deputy Commissioner.
Oversees timekeeping aspects of department of Community Services
Ability to operate application programs, including the MUNIS system;
High School Diploma, GED or Equivalency Diploma and two (2) years of full-time community service experience or experience directly related to the duties of the position.
OR
Five years of full-time experience in areas directly related to service programs for senior citizens.
Note: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated to meet full-
time experience requirements.
Thorough knowledge programs related to senior citizens in such areas as recreation, mental and physical functioning, health care, nutrition, housing;
Thorough knowledge of city administration in relations to the needs of the department;
Good knowledge of public relations techniques in dealing with aging population;
Ability to gather, analyze and assemble information for presentation;
Ability to maintain records and reports of a confidential nature;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Ability to operate a personal computer in the use of application programs and other related office equipment;
Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with staff, clients, city, county and state agencies;
Good knowledge of budget planning and administration;
Familiarity with NYS Health Department guidelines for the aged;
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and trust;
Integrity, tact, courtesy;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
