Become a part of a growing team! The City of Bristol, Virginia (pop. 17,219) is seeking applications for the position of Fire Chief. The Fire Chief reports to the City Manager and will be integral in supporting the health, growth and welfare of our community, and fulfilling our mission to making Bristol a “Good Place to Live.” This position also serves as the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in in fire science, management, administration or relevant major preferred. Successful candidates must possess at least 10 years’ experience in in Fire Department supervision, command, and administration, preferably within a local government. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be used to meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Fire Officer, VDEM Emergency Management Certificate, and Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or eligibility for certifications, required.

The City’s Fire Department is made up of 44 dedicated firefighters/EMTs broken up into 3 shifts and 2 civilian employees. All members of this Department set high standards and strive to deliver professional fire services to all citizens and enforce their mission statement to protect lives, property, and the environment from natural and man-made disasters. The Department provides a full range of services including:
- Fire Suppression and Prevention
- Emergency Medical Services
- Special Operations
- Emergency Management
- Fire Investigation
- Code Enforcement
- Regional Haz-Mat
- Regional Heavy Technical Rescue (HTR)
The Fire Department also provides hazardous materials response and mitigation, heavy-technical rescue response, and emergency management coordination for the City. Each shift participates in public education activities throughout the year.
