DEFINITION
Perform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, light, medium and heavy-duty truck, various sizes and types of construction and other power-driven and non-powered equipment. This position must work well independently and most importantly, communicate and work as a team with all Fleet Department and City staff members, providing excellent, supportive and respectful customer service and human relations skills that support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Fleet Manager or Fleet Staff Supervisor Designee.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT/ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician I
• Provides friendly customer service and advice, which may include the training in the proper use of mechanical equipment by its operators. Ability to work with Fleet Manager, and fellow employees in scheduling workflow for a smooth and successful Fleet Department operation.
• Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties in automobiles, trucks and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.
• Road tests, inspects and troubleshoots automotive, and light duty trucks and equipment to assess their condition and determine repairs.
• Performs scheduled maintenance and inspection of vehicles.
• Repair, adjust and replace brake systems on light duty vehicles including disc, and hydraulic brakes.
• Keep electronic records on work performed, time and materials used per job.
• Provide assistance to other technicians and personal when needed.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician II
In addition to items of Fleet Mechanic/Technician I:
• Diagnose, adjust, repair or replace, electrical components, such as starting/charging system, Emergency/non-emergency lighting, various electrical and computer-controlled components.
• Adjust, repair, replace or rebuild, fuel systems components.
• Diagnose, adjust, repair or replace components on various models of hydraulic, air, or electronic braking systems, including computer-controlled braking systems.
• Diagnose, repair and replace suspension and steering components.
• Use welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.
• Perform limited repairs on gasoline and diesel engines, and drivetrain.
• Perform limited repairs on automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, power take off drives, clutches, and related drive train components.
• Order materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.
• Keep electronic records on work performed, time and materials used per job.
• Performs on-site field repairs to stationary or disabled equipment.
• Small engine, diagnose and repair.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician III
In addition to items of Fleet Mechanic/Technician I and II:
• Install Police and special emergency equipment on new vehicles, both light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment before entering service.
• Train, mentor and assist other technicians. Oversee fellow workers on jobs requiring more than one person.
• Maintains awareness of new trends and technologies in the field of automotive and heavy equipment repair.
• Maintain work, time and materials records.
• May act as Fleet manager, Supervisor or Lead, in absence of same.

Other Duties I-III
May be required to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment.
• Operation of internal combustion engines and hydraulic operated equipment.
• Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
• Tools, equipment and procedures used in repair and maintenance of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
• Maintaining an effective working relationship with Fleet Operations Staff, City employees, external customers and vendors.
• Safe working practices, rules and regulations.

Ability to:
Perform a full range of equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment for both major and minor repair work.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
• Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
• Learn to maintain a variety of shop and repair records.
• Understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Be able to lift, up to 40 pounds continuously and up to 80 pounds on occasion.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Must be able to read manuals, understand diagrams and interpret video instruction, participate in online and in person training.
• Basic computer knowledge and ability to run maintenance software.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Advancement to a higher-grade position is subject to the approval and position availability by the Fleet Manager and Facilities an Fleet Director. 
Although ASE certifications are an area to display your personal knowledge as it relates to each of the three levels, a combination of experience, training, desire to advance in the skills that apply to each position is as important if not more than test certifications alone:

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician I:
Entry level, apprentice or service technician. 1-2 years documented experience in a related field or applicable training facility.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician II:
Technician at midlevel, requiring an advanced diagnostic ability, 5 years documented experience in a related field. Years of experience maybe substituted with an observed and proven ability to understand and perform all work requirements of this level. Verification and approval must be by Facilities and Fleet director, Fleet Manager and all Fleet personal.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician III:
Highly skilled technician at master level, requiring advanced diagnostic abilities, 10 years of documented experience in a related field. Years of experience maybe substituted with an observed and proven ability to understand and perform all work requirements of this level. Verification and approval must be by Facilities and Fleet director, Fleet Manager and all Fleet personal.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License and good driving record. Must have or obtain a a CFC License within 90 days of hire.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician I
• CFC refrigerant recovery license.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician II:
• CFC refrigerant recovery license.
• DOT inspection.
• Five years documented experience in a fleet maintenance repair field or substitute approval.

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician III:
CFC refrigerant recovery license.
• DOT inspection.
• Five additional years documented experience in a fleet maintenance repair field or substitute approval.
• Experience in overseeing operations, work quality, parts inventory, office operations, customer service, provides vacation, temporary lead, supervisor or manager relief as needed.
• Ability to obtain a valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License, as position discipline requires (typically for Truck/ HD Mechanic designation) (Class A is recommended)

The City of Brighton has always strived to have ASE certified technicians in all areas of repairs and maintenance offered by the Fleet Department. ASE certifications are highly recommended, we encourage and support ASE testing and certification. It plays an important part in the advancement of positions. Those recommendations by position are as follows:


Fleet Mechanic/ Technician I 
ASE Certifications: T8 preventative maintenance, G1 Maintenance & light repair, A5 Brakes,

Fleet Mechanic/ Technician II and III
ASE Certifications: any of Automotive, A1 thru A9. 
ASE Certifications: any of Med/Heavy Truck, T1 thru T8.
ASE Specialty Certifications: L1, L2, L4
