What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Services Specialist position at City of Bolivar?
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Animal Services Specialist will be responsible for ordinances related to animal control including responding to citizen complaints regarding stray, injured, dangerous or unwanted animals, dogs and cats running at large and investigations of cruelty to animals, and animal bite reports with assistance from the Police Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs daily cleaning and maintenance of pound and assists the supervisor as needed.
- Maintains pound equipment and tools.
- Release animals to their owners.
- Collects money from animal releases and registrations.
- Assists with intake of animals including taking photos, vaccinating, checking for microchips, and logging the animals into the pound.
- Assists the supervisor with veterinarian appointments and with vaccinating animals and euthanizing sick, injured, and unclaimed animals.
- Administers medicine prescribed by the vet for animals at the pound.
- Answers the phones at the pound and provides accurate information on current available adoptions or return to owner animals.
- Maintain accurate inventory of vaccines and reports for the supervisor.
- Monitors sick and injured animals and reports their condition to the Supervisor.
- Directs incoming animals to the appropriate pens and cages.
- Keeps all animals tagged for identification.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of animals and services rendered at the pound and reports to the supervisor.
- Assist citizens with animal adoptions.
- Participates in community events and educates about animal services ordinances and processes with the public.
- Can perform all the duties and responsibilities in the absence of the Animal Services Supervisor. (once eligibility and certifications are obtained).
- Perform any other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
- High School Graduate or GED.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must like working around animals.
- Experience working with animals is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Familiar with municipal government operations and with City ordinances and proceedings.
- The ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in typing, word processing and related clerical skills.
- The ability to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- The ability to protect the confidentiality of sensitive information.
- The ability to meet and deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- The ability to always manage confidential information appropriately and professionally at all times.
- The ability to maintain accuracy and diligence amidst a multitask, frequently changing, priority driven environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Constant sitting, walking, or standing.
- Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and climb.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Hold and grip objects.
- Occasional periods of sitting in a vehicle.
- Acceptable Physical Capacity Profile test results are required.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
- Have a valid Missouri Driver’s License and must remain insurable under the City’s liability insurance policy.
