General Statement of Job
Investigates crashes, enforces parking regulations and performs a variety of community service activities for the Police Department; does related work as required. This includes working shifts, holidays and weekends. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Functions
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Community Service Officers (CSOs) investigate traffic crashes and issues citations, if applicable. CSOs will testify in court proceedings when necessary. They direct traffic at intersections and assist with traffic control at special events. They enforce parking regulations. They take police reports over the telephone for minor crimes or civil issues. They follow up on investigations of hit and run crashes. They photograph crash or minor crime scenes. They assist motorists with disabled vehicles.
RELATED TASKS:
CSOs deliver council agendas when necessary. They will also as assist with school crossings when necessary. They will also perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
CSOs should possess general knowledge of traffic and parking ordinances to include traffic laws. They should have the ability to investigate traffic crashes and perform all duties fairly and impartially. They should have the ability to handle people under stressful situations; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. They must be able to take and pass the community service officer aptitude examination at the time of applying.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES:
Candidates will be required to attend a Public Service Aid Academy selected by the department. In addition to the department's established hiring criteria, candidates must meet all training center entrance requirements and maintain academic and performance standards throughout the course of study.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid State of Florida driver's license with no more than six (6) points in the past three (3) years.
The applicant must successfully pass a complete background investigation to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
