The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Building Maintenance Mechanic! The current vacancy is within the Public Works Department. In this role, you will have the opportunity to performs plumbing, carpentry, remodeling, painting, and a variety of other craft or building trades through the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities. This is the journey-level class in this series and is distinguished from Building Maintenance Supervisor, which is the first-line supervisory level in this series.

The eligible list will be used for future vacancies in the Public Works department; Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront department; and Library.
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years experience in commercial building maintenance work, which includes substantial carpentry and plumbing duties; or completion of a state approved construction or building trade apprenticeship program. Possession of HVAC or Playground Safety Inspector certificate is highly desirable.
Other requirements include possession of a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Candidates must also possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds; willingness to work evening and weekend shifts; willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions; and willingness to work with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances.

The exam process will include, but may not be limited to:
- Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date)
- Multiple-Choice Written Exam (Scheduled for January 24 and 27, 2025)
Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews slated for the week of February 10, 2025.
