The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Aquatics Specialist II in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide instruction in swim and serve as a lifeguard at assigned swimming facilities. You'll teach swim skills to people of all ages and supervise the conduct of swimmers in order to maintain health and safety standards.

A minimum of two (2) summer seasons working as a lifeguard or swim instructor.

Other requirements: Must possess a valid Water Safety Instruction Card which requires an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, and successful completion of first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training.

If acting as a Coach or teaching a specific water sports activity, in addition to the qualifications outlined above, must possess a valid USA Swimming Level 1 Certification or Specialized Aquatics Certificate. Applications must be received by Monday, April 20, 2026, at 5:00 PM PST and must include a completed application, all required attachments listed below, and responses to any supplemental questions. Please note that resumes are not a substitute for a completed application.

**If you do not answer the supplemental questions accurately you will be automatically disqualified.**

  • Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date)
  • Review of responses to supplemental questions
Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
