Essential Job Functions: Serves as skilled mechanic in the diagnostic and repair of electrical and hydraulic circuits, maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered construction and landfill equipment; performs undercarriage overhauls and repairs; uses various types of tools and testing equipment; maintains record of time and parts used; may make road calls; may supervise helpers; may perform welding duties.
Other Job Functions: Welding, fabricating, hydraulic cylinder and A/C repair; performs other duties as required. Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of heavy truck and construction equipment; knowledge of shop safety procedures.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to use diagnostic equipment; ability to repair or replace all parts associated with gasoline and diesel equipment including engine, chassis, electrical and hydraulics; ability to read electrical and hydraulic schematic; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read and interpret complex technical manuals; ability to supervise subordinate mechanics; ability to make independent decisions and to complete assigned tasks with little supervision; ability to operate shop equipment such as hydraulic jacks, overhead cranes, winches and forklifts; ability to make yearly progress toward ASE Master Technician rating; ability to operate large trucks and construction equipment.
Physical Requirements: Constantly hears and sees; frequently stands, bends, writes by hand, operates a PC, fax machine, answers telephone, climbs, crouches, drives, reaches, stoops, cleans, carries, lifts, pulls, and drags objects weighing up to 100 lbs.; uses measuring equipment, physical dexterity; requires stamina.
Education/Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent; minimum two (2) years experience in all phases of complex repair of heavy duty truck and construction equipment; advanced training in automotive and heavy equipment repair and experience in electrical troubleshooting preferred.
