We’re seeking a dependable, energetic person to join our Convention Center team as a Special Events Worker. From set-up to guest support, you’ll help ensure every event runs safely and successfully!!
Special Event Services:
The position performs a wide range of activities and services for conventions, special events and trade shows in a public assembly/event/parking facility including operating a variety of light to medium duty equipment. Employees in this class will exercise appropriate safety precautions in handling chemical agents to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety. The worker also interacts with residents, visitors, and event organizers and attendees by providing professional customer service and assistance during events. Performs related event coordination work as required.
Downtown Services:
The position will also serve as an ambassador to the City of Bastrop Main Street Program providing quality customer service to property owners, employees, City staff and the general public; assisting with Main Street programs, projects, and events; and performing other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Special Events Services:
- Communicates and provides customer service in a professional manner, answering client and / or visitor questions, and provides assistance during event coordination.
- Performs activities and services for conventions, events, and trade shows in a public assembly/event/parking facility.
- Operates various types of equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, extractors to clean carpet, etc.
- Uses appropriate chemicals and or cleaners safely and productively according to instructions to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety.
- Performs custodial tasks, i.e., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; mopping, waxing and buffing floors; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, kitchen facilities.
- Monitors facility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment.
- Responsible for performing event set-up and tear down; loads/unloads and stacks materials by hand.
- Reads and interprets stage and seating diagrams.
- Assembles and disassembles portable stages, tables, and seating arrangements.
- Moves furniture and other equipment, as needed, in the performance of duties.
- Performs light security services.
- Prepares incident and event reports as needed.
- Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.
- Reports facility maintenance needs upon detection to immediate supervisor.
- Checks, cleans, and performs routine maintenance on facility custodial materials and equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and changing mop heads.
Downtown Services:
- Provides quality customer service to property owners, business owners, employees, City staff, the general public, and all other work contacts.
- Performs various types of grounds and facility maintenance and repair tasks.
- Removes and disposes of trash and debris from public property.
- Operates various types of light and medium power equipment.
- Assists with Main Street programs, projects, and events.
- Performs all job duties in accordance with all approved safety rules and procedures and promptly reports all accidents, injuries, theft, loss, and broken or damaged equipment or property to the immediate supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
OTHER DUTIES
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- Time scheduled off should be managed so as to not interfere with accomplishing tasks, including special events/projects, and assignments with deadlines.
- Serves as an extension of current duties as required for emergency management, particularly in the areas of shelter, debris removal, and recovery.
A. Training and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year facility maintenance experience is preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
B. Licenses:
- Schedule: evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays are required based on program and event needs.
- Standard Hours: 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. on days without scheduled evening events.
- Primary Event Hours: evenings and weekends/holidays for events.
- Days Off: two (2) days off (often non-consecutive) during the traditional work week.
- Flexibility: overtime and holiday work may be required depending on the event calendar.
D. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the internet/electrical connections for meetings, banquets, and tradeshows.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Must be self-motivated, responsible, and reliable.
- Must possess solid organizational skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with departmental staff, vendors, and the general public.
- Ability to set up audio/video equipment.
- Ability to work well with the public in a professional and courteous manner during all Convention Center/Main Street events.
- Ability to open and close facility and handle needs of the clients/vendors on a rotating basis.
- Ability to read and follow floor plan sketches and diagrams.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work.
- Ability to read and comprehend standard English, such as that rendered in warning labels and cleaning instructions.
- Must be able to work overtime, nonstandard hours, weekends, and holidays as required to complete assignments.
E. Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including frequent and extensive walking and prolonged standing for the majority of the shift, particularly during event operations.
- Physical requirements include but are not limited to lifting up to 100 pounds frequently. Subject to standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, bending, twisting, balancing, vision, hearing, talking and foot controls frequently, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, and climbing occasionally; sitting and crawling rarely.
- Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, machinery with moving parts, hazardous materials/chemicals, and infectious diseases is involved; utilizes personal protective equipment as necessary.
