General Description and Classification Standards:

The Department of Transportation is seeking motivate and driven Interns to join our dynamic team. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience across multiple facets of transportation initiatives. Our interns will be exposed to various areas such as Strategy and Planning, Capital Delivery, Right-of-Way Maintenance, Communications, Engineering, and Administration.

Supervision Received:

The intern will be supervised by their appointed department leadership. Leadership will manage and advise the intern on assigned tasks, providing guidance, and feedback to ensure the intern’s success throughout their internship. The Leader will also help develop the interns’ skillset, ensuring that the intern receives hand-on training and exposure to a variety of transportation initiatives and projects. A liaison will also be available to assist in any capacity where the intern may need extra assistance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.

• Assist in the planning and execution of transportation-related projects, including those focused on mobility and capital projects
• Support Engineering team in analyzing transportation systems, street maintenance efforts, and project development
• Aid in communication materials and presentations related to transportation initiatives.
• Collaborate with various departments, helping with administrative tasks and ensuring the smooth flow of information.
• Participate in meetings and site visits, gaining insight into the full cycle of transportation initiatives from design to implementation and maintenance.
• Attend and contribute to community meetings and events to understand public concerns and communicate transportation updates
• Present findings and updates in meetings, developing public speaking skills through day-to-day tasks and assignments
• Work closely with project managers and senior staff to support daily activities and gain valuable exposure to real-world applications of transportation concepts.
  
  

Learning and Exposure Opportunities:

• Exposure to Mobility and Capital Delivery: Learn about and assist in planning, development, and implementation of mobility projects, focusing on transportation infrastructure and systems.
• Street Maintenance Operations: Gain hands-on experience in street maintenance processes, understanding the methods and technologies used to maintain public roads and facilities
• Collaboration Across Disciplines: Work alongside teams in Engineering, Communications, and Administration to understand how different departments collaborate and contribute to transportation projects.
• Community Engagement and Public Speaking: Participate in community meetings and gain valuable exposure to engaging with the public, learning effective communication strategies and public speaking skills through direct involvement in assignments and presentations.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Transportation, Civil Engineering or another Engineering discipline, Urban Planning, or a related field or a High School student currently enrolled in school.
• Strong desire to learn and a proactive attitude toward gaining new skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and adapt to new challenges
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Work, PowerPoint).
• Some knowledge (not required) of traffic modeling software, or other relevant tools.
  
  

Work Environment:

• Work requires local travel to ATLDOT facilities.
• May be required to work on holidays and weekends.
  
  

Lifting Requirements:

Sedentary work

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

The intern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and challenging environment, working with experienced safety professionals to develop and implement safety initiatives.
