Salary Range: $40,945.05- $51,181.31

General Description and Classification Standards:

Assists with performing skilled maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting work with electrical systems. Performs electrical work in areas including signal controllers, general traffic signals including Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) and School Flashers, and streetlights. Work involves the technical application of electrical principles and mechanical aptitude. This is the entry-level position for this job family. Individuals entering this level must already possess the basic knowledge of the work, motor skills, mechanical skills, and physical capabilities to carry out basic tasks. Typically performs the simplest pertinent tasks, assists higher-level workers in more complex jobs, and prepares or puts away tools. The position may be part of an apprentice program; the position may be classified as an Apprentice if such a program/class exists. The position is distinguished from a semi-skilled laborer in that this position routinely uses tools appropriate to higher-level skilled positions.

Supervision Received:

Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. Carry out repairs related to work orders for streetlights and traffic signals with supervision support if required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains streetlights and traffic signals; troubleshoots to identify the problem and repair as needed.
  • Installs, services, and repairs lighting fixtures, electrical panels, outlets, and wiring.
  • Operates power hand tools and other specialized electrical equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and services specialized electrical equipment specifically Milbank and controllers.
  • Constructs and maintains service equipment.
  • Reads electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Requisitions material and supplies from stockroom and contacts supervisors for necessary parts to complete work
  • Participates in occurrences designated as “Emergency Events” by department Commissioner or Mayor in direct or expanded role.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of electrical theory and methods, materials, tools, equipment, and systems used in the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations about the electrical trade.
  • Basic knowledge of computer logic and programming.
  • knowledge of methods and practices in the maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • knowledge of safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in operating basic hand, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools; skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely as well as apply mechanical aptitude; ability to assemble, install, and maintain, all equipment used in work duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience –

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • At least 6 months of related experience in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting.

Preferred Requirements –

  • Completion of Technical or Vocational course of study in electricity and/or welding or similar area
  • 1 year of related experience in a residential, commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting.
  • Train and qualify for a Class B CDL license after 6 months of employment to be considered for promotion into a Traffic Signal Technician role.

Licensures and Certifications

  • Class C driver’s license

Work Environment:

Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogens and or pests like bees or wasps. Physical and sensory capabilities to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions.

Lifting Requirements:

Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Environmental Factors:

Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogens and or pests like bees or wasps.
