Part-Time Deputy Bailiff / Probation Officer
Athens County Municipal Court
The Athens County Municipal Court is seeking applications for the position of Deputy Bailiff/Probation Officer. This position is responsible for supporting courtroom operations, managing a small probation caseload, and assisting the Judge and Bailiff with daily court functions. The role includes monitoring restitution, preparing court documents, interacting with defendants and jurors, and ensuring efficient and orderly court proceedings. This is a part-time on‑site position directly appointed by the Judge and covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. The pay rate is $15.37–$19.32 per hour (determined by the Municipal Court Judge). The position may also be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
Essential Functions:
- Run weekly restitution reports and maintain accurate restitution tracking.
- Advise the Judge on restitution status during court proceedings.
- Issue motions and other court documents as needed.
- Check individuals in for court, both in person and via Zoom.
- Check jurors in and assist with jury trial procedures.
- Manage a small probation caseload, including monitoring compliance and documenting progress.
- Communicate with defendants, attorneys, and court personnel regarding probation requirements and court expectations.
- Assist the Judge or Bailiff with additional tasks and courtroom duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications and Specifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Computer usage: Proficiency in office software and the ability to learn court management systems. Must be able to communicate through email and instant messaging.
- Capability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Completion of a background check post-offer.
