What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Shelter Technician - FT position at City of Athens?
This position is responsible for animal care including, but not limited to handling, coordinating, monitoring of health and temperament. Allowing a hands-on ability to meet the animals’ needs and prepare them for adoption. Maintains a humane and healthy environment for animals and visitors to the Athens Animal Shelter.
• Care for, feed, monitor, medicate and perform minor treatment on animals.
• Report observed health or behavior issues to managers and adoption specialists.
• Maintain animal shelter by cleaning animal cages, kennels, other animal areas, and floors.
• Aid prospective clients in the selection of animals for adoption and in the preparation of adoption forms.
• Provide administrative and customer service support for Athens Animal Shelter: monitor the front desk, answer inquiries by phone or in person, perform data entry, and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain database for the Athens Animal Shelter by entering accurate information for adopters and adoptable animals.
• Process animal transfers, animal redemptions, and animal intakes services and records.
• Provide information to the public about Athens Animal Shelter programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
• Inform new owners of pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
• Provides humane education to customers.
• Keep current inventory of necessary supplies and report shortages to managers and adoption specialists.
• Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to Managers and adoption specialists.
• Represent the Athens Animal Shelter by providing excellent customer service and focus.
• Additional tasks assigned by the Athens Animal Shelter Manager.
- Knowledge of the City of Athens policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Athens Animal Shelter policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to, admitting, cleaning and medical protocols.
- Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
- Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.
- Ability to represent the City of Athens Animal Shelter in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff.
- Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Athens Animal Shelter and Animal Control, with volunteers, the public, and be a team player.
- Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.
- Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.
- Must be detail oriented and have strong time management skills.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
- Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least 18 year of age.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Knowledge of humane care for animals preferred.
- Highschool diploma or GED preferred.
